Flat VS. Round horn anvils 26 May 2012 16:19 #1

Been thinking about getting a new anvil. I've been using a Future 3 for awhil now but I don't really like having a clip horn or heel cams on the back. So I've narrowed my anvil search down to two different 125 lb. plain jane anvils. My only dilemma is one is a flat horn, and the other is round. Which do you all like and dislike?

I prefer a round horn and that's what I have in the shop.

However, the first anvil I ever bought (1981 or so) is a little NC with a flat horn and I still carry it in the truck. I thought about replacing it a thousand times but it's been working this long.

Some other thoughts...I have an anvil brand legend and a couple of Peter Rights which all have round horns. Sometimes I wish I had a bigger round horn more like the future or the Scott.

Even the small farrier anvils with a flat horn have pretty large horns. I think these evolved with shoeing (specifically cold shoeing) in mind and I think they work well for that. I know cold shoeing isn't very popular around here but some of us do it some anyway.

I guess what I'm getting at is that it might depend on what you plan on using the anvil for and how.

The Peter Wrights I have are what I think is usually called an "English pattern". There are some pictures of mine in my album. The album is titled "Ferrara".

Anyway, they have a lot of mass in the face, waist and base with a relatively small horn.

They made them in a range of sizes. I have one that's 170...something and one that's 180...something (I don't remember the exact weights).

After years of using a farriers anvil I have just bought a round horn anvil. I bought it brand new and am going to enjoy it a lot.

I am going into a new stage of my career, and that is working at forging and contesting. I never had the time in years past, but now am looking to learn new techniques and methods of shaping shoes and the enjoyment of competeing with others of similar interest.

my 2 cents worth ;)

I've finally saved up enough to get a round horn anvil. I'm looking at a 100 lb Emerson.

If you bought it you won't regret it. I exclusively hot shoe and I bought mine last month and it is really nice. It's small enough to put on my swing out, but has a nice horn, face and you don't have to give up the turning cams for last minute adjustments.

I like the round horn. I think the flat horn was dreamed up in the early days to be used as a "shoe opener." You could lay the toe or quarters on the flat to get daylight and open the shoe a bit. But you can also do that on the near side of the horn by making a "bridge" between your tong grip and the horn and hitting in mid air. In fact, lots of shaping is done with leverage blows where the bend comes in mid air. The horn doesn't shape the shoe; the near and far blows beyond the horn do most of the shaping.

Don't understand the problem with having heel cams or clip horn on an anvil if the anvil lets you do your job. If they weren't on the Future 3, would you like it better? If so, then just cut'em off and enjoy!! Use the money saved for something else.

The Future 2 anvil has a conical horn and no turning cams.
