Anyone tried the Estwing lineman's hammer? Just looks like a rounding hammer, only with an Estwing handle.

Use it like a hammer and it'll work fine.

Unless there are others, that's a 40oz(2.5lb) hammer. About $32 at Anvil Brand. You can get a 2lb Nordic for @ $28. You can also get a matching ball pein there. ;) I don't/havent used either though I doubt I'd trade a Diamond for one.(I don't use Diamonds regularly either though I own several.)

27 yrs ago I was involved with remachining the Estwing lineman's hammer into a rounding hammer. It only took me about 11 yrs to sell 144 of them at $25 each. Initially the cold shoers liked them because they were guaranteed indestructable and there was no wood hammer to break/loosen but after a period of time they discovered without the wood handle there was no whip effect and it was brutal on wrists and elbows. The hot shoers/shoe builders never got along with the balance of them and scale burning into the handle really stinks.

So moral of the story... been there, done that and got the T shirt to prove it

To have a good hammer in your hand that it feels right for you is
worth a lot.
at the moment for shoe making and every day hot fitting
i use a Derek Gardner

and for cold shoeing a Jim Poor cross pein
i find it great

Right now, I'm latching onto every hammer that I find interesting and I can afford.

Take a class with Brian Brazeal and learn to forge your own. Check the ABANA web site or google him for schedule. He travels all over to do these clinics. He's a good guy and it's fun/worth your while.

Money's tight again; thinking I might be having another back surgery again and/or retiring. :(

I use a 3lb Estwing for cold shaping steel, the heavy ball peen for shaping aluminum, a medium ball peen for knocking down clinches, and the 16 oz. straight claw I grind a lot of metal off to make a driving hammer.

I like the Estwing rubber grip for rotating the handle in my hand and pitching nails at different angles. I like to set the nail, then drive it with 3 hits. On hot days I wipe the grips down with a towell for a better grip.

I agree that wood handles are better for forge work - I don't use Estwings for hot work.

BTW, why can't someone invent something like a pistol magazine that holds nails - you could just slide one off the top as you go. Or what if they used wax to bind nails in rows of 10, and you break off one at a time? The fastest way I have found to dispense nails so far is to bolt pot magnets onto 3 inch binder clips, each clip can hold around 16 nails.

A few days after this, a friend of mine and I were comparing tools, and he really bragged his Estwing up. He's been using it for years. Then, he showed me how to draw clips cold. No heat. I posted a video of it on youtube. Last time I talked to him, he told me he did some with a plain claw hammer, just for the hell of it.
