I forgot I took these a few weeks ago, so here they are, warts and all for your feedback (and amusement). The knife work is rough as feet here are like slate at the moment, I like how I even got the clinches into a banana shape
A bit of history; this is a 14yo thoroughbred ridden by a teenager, does basic riding and a bit of jumping. He has awful feet, I have tried bringing the toe back with a flat shoe but he walks off forging with every step. If I leave the toe, he doesn't forge but his toes crack and the heels get trashed. He has one foot quite smaller than the other and basically I just don't like where his feet were going.
I didn't have full wedge pads to use so I filled the cavity with equipac, which was difficult with him wriggling, but it got in there. I hope it gives enough support
How did I do?

So how is he moving now ?
I think you can raise his angle a wee bit more from looking at the pastern shots.
Obviously hard to tell anything from photo's but was my impression when looking at picture. A long pastern like that will have a lot of flexation in it when moving and if angle is off you can give too much flexation.
IF you bevel the toe by tipping your nippers when trimming this horse, you will in actuality back the toe up,(thus getting a better angle and then fit the shoe by rockering the toe to the beveled toe) and you will change the break over point, and you will help decrease the chance of this horse interfering when moving

Your shoe look nice... :)

Your inovation of filling in with equipak was inovative and thinking outside the box. When you have a job to do and just don't have the correct materials to work with, it is then that you become a bit of an inventor. Good for you. At next visit you can replace with what you want, if it needs to be done.

Just my thoughts, I am sure others will have good points also.

I talked with Mal and Sue via skype the other night. Was really good to see them. Do you have access to skype ?

my 2 cents worth ;)

Very impressed, I have not used one myself but I like your fit and nail and finish. Well done for posting it.

How did you do - well I guess the horse will let you know. As long as they walk off after doing well, then you hit the target. Will be interesting to see how things look at the next shoeing. What you did is the best thing about this job - we got to assess a problem, dig into our "toolbox" and see if we can pull out the right solution. Good job and good thinking of what to do.

Looks awesome!!! You did a great job! I like to use that gutter guard stuff for Vettec when I have an open pad bc its pretty expensive so I want to make sure it stays put. How much is Vettec in then Land Down Under? :silly:

In other news, these smileys are pretty great! Who did this? :bs: :pc:

Steve did, haha, he was very excited to get those out there. There's an announcement about the changes made today, lots of annoying little things got addressed.

Thanks for the nice words guys, i have not heard how he is doing and i'm away at the moment. I have not had trouble with equipac falling out in the past, but i did pump some in from an old tube that didn't set up at all and then left gooey oily yuk all over the sole that i had to clean out on one foot. I am a tad worried about that B) .
I have not applied a lot of pads and there is very little choice available in australia apparently. What brands of full wedge pads do you guys like to use? I would like to order some for having on hand but its a bit hit and miss not being abole to see them first. I ordered some bulls eye pads a while back and they are really hard plastic and not at all what i was hoping for.

Ray Steele makes a full wedge in plastic with a thin layer of leather on the foot side.

Contact info at - bestbuyhorseshoes.com

Not shown on the web site, but Ray has a huge variety of pads in plastic and leather with various configurations including frog support. Worth a telephone call to discuss your needs - actually Ray is always worth a telephone call . . . (413) 863-2443 Don't know if he has a distributor in Oz . . . maybe that could be you!
