If a box of nails got wet in your truck and rusted, would you still use them? Would you only throw out the worst? Or would you just throw them all out?

I've got a box that got wet at one end, the nails on one end of the box are 90% rust, the nails on the other end just have a spot or two on them. Its a full box so I hate to throw them all out but, caution is saying I should.

What do you all think?

You could try soaking them in something like C.L.R. to remove the rust and then rinse them in water...being sure to dry them carefully after the rinse. Just a thought.

Thanks guys, CLR is something I hadn't even considered. Sounds like a good idea and I'm pretty sure my wife has some.

Yeah, it's a $40.00 box that's why I don't want to throw them out.

NO!!

never because if you should get a close nail or should accidentally quick one; and the horse has not had a tetinous shot in awhile; blood posioning can happen; also called lock jaw.

the same goes for rusty shoes; unless they are heated to red heat and brushed at a orange to black heat and let to cool dry.

just better to safe than sorry; and your reputation isn't worth a cost of box of nails or a pair of rusty shoes.

i have some Aussie nails that got wet n rusted
some worse than others
Ihad a full Farriers pack of them If pored about a cup of keroseen over then and shut the lid
I shook them untill my arms were sore not to long and had a look
I was plesently surprised and how good they came up
I give them another shake and left them to soke a little
I came back later n rinced them in clean kero n the drained them off I put then in a old pillow case n shook them about to dry them off
GOOD AS GOLD turned up like new

NEVER USE A RUSTY NAIL
for the price of a nail what trouble to cause ?

I've used quite a few rusted shoes, comes from applying drill tec in bulk, but never used a rusty nail before. That's why I was asking what others do.

Red, thanks for that suggestion too. I think I'm gonna try to clean these up before I use them.

Linda, that's kinda what my worry was about using them. Maybe, I'll save them for use on my own horses and not put them in other peoples horses. At, least if it goes bad I won't get sued that way.

Not sure that rust (oxidation) is that bad. Expect that rust implies dirt and bacteria.

If you load/reload your own ammunition, you probably have a case cleaner. I find that the walnut shells I use on empty brass does a fine job of cleaning the nails.

I just got a couple of thousand nails wet and rusty, didn't realize the used Cap I bought had a leak. cleaned them up with CLR Wiped down the worst of them, then soaked them with WD40. Worked great, but they tend to drive a little higher with the WD on them.
