I am thinking I may try riveting a double layer of cast to the hoof side of a shoe then using equilox to glue it on.

Anyone here tried this? Will it work? I need it tomorrow so no time to order one in.

Thanks

Alicia, About 2 months ago I glued a set on a laminitic pony with Superfast and then used Equicast to reinforce it. I took it off about 5 weeks later, and it was a real task. I know it would have easily stayed on much longer. If used on abrasive surfaces, I'm sure the Equicast would wear off the bottom, but the shoe would probably stay on.

No, I doubt it will work. No offense, and I credit your creativity, but the fabric will likely pull out of the rivets. Fiberglass in a urethane resin is not as strong nor abrasion resistant as the urethane bonded fabric composite.

Rob Sigafoos came up with a pretty darn great idea, and as I know Rob and inherited his lab, everything was meticulously thought out.

You might cast the hoof and direct glue a shoe to the cast if you are looking for an alternative.

Alicia, just put your cast on and glue your shoe to the bottom of the cast, steel or aluminum. they will stay put till your ready to take them off.
Be sure to grind the foot surface of the shoe and rasp the ground surface of the cast clean, i use equilox and i've not had one come off.
And glue the cast to the hoofwall with equilox as well.

Appreciate all the feed back.
Sounds like you guys saved me a failed attempt. :p

I was honestly thinking the double layered cast might work as a rim pad, so I could kill two birds with one stone.

Dave & Pat as obvious as that seems I didn't think of that. lol
That is what I will do cast then direct glue.

I could just direct glue but I want to lift the hoof off the shoe a bit in this set up.

thanks guys

you can buy kevlar fabric. I payed $10 for a roll a while backI haven't used up yet, and ive done a lot of repairs with it. I may just glue it to an AL shoe and see how it holds up on my wifes horse.

The next best thing I have done was to use plumbers pipe hanger metal. It comes in a roll. I rivet it to the shoe on the quarters and glue the hangar metal to the side of the foot like long clips. Works very well on all the ponies I've done it to.

Very cool set up with the metal tabs. Do you have a picture perhaps?

ive done it with the kevlar material just like you suggested in your OP.
put a layer of equilox on the VERY CLEAN shoe, applied kevlar, another layer of equilox, a plastic frog pad, then put about 3-4 rivets on each side to hold it all together, then glued it to the hoof... lasted 5 weeks.
