Found this stick welder on craigslist fo $40. Runs on 110. Figure it's good enough for welding on bars or clips. It says something about using carbon rods for cutting or heating and bending. Might have to pick some up and try that for shaping.

Copenhagen. You can see it in my smile!

This is what I use for clips and barshoes. It doesn't require electricity and it too will heat the shoes up so you can shape them. :D

That is a good welder for making forge and anvil stands, so you can shape and make bar shoes and draw clips much more efficiently than with a welder.
My perspective is from the point of having laid a couple hundred miles of bead and also turned a few horseshoes.
Sensitivity check: This post acknowledged that you have a fine welder and is meant to encourage you in the skills to become a better Farrier.

I'm not sweating it. I want to be proficient doing things all sorts of different ways. Sometimes, arc welding will be the handiest method. Plus, it's just a handy little deal to have around.

Do you forge weld clips? On long footed show horses... ASB's, Morgans and so on we use big heavy clips that we weld on. I think that's what he meant when he said "welding on bars or clips".

I carry a forge and a welder. Needing electricity isn't such a problem since most places seem to be too dark to work without electric lights anyway. No electricity, no light, no work.

I, of course, can't speak for Travis, but I don't think he was referring to stacked packages on gated show horses.
I once heard of a guy who would weld 3/8" flat washers on the shoes after they were nailed on for clips, then pound them into the foot. probably the only part of the job done hot.

I must agree with Bill as usual. This Travis fellow reminds me a lot of Phil.
Nonetheless though, there are many good non horseshoeing uses for a nice arc welder.

I've dealt with a couple of those 110 volt stick welders, same trade name, one was a pretty good machine one wasn't. I threw it in the dumpster a couple years ago. Hope you got a good one.

This one is no longer available on E-bay, Amazon or Craig's List.

Upkeep can be difficult and expensive but when turned on, creates a huge spark and a lot of heat. Doesn't need to be plugged in but can often be plugged into. Does not require a pre-fluxed rod. The Consumer Products Safety Union gives a 4.8 star rating and offers this advise: "Caution, may get extremely hot. Handle/use with care."

No comment on your lack of a forge.

That said, you're not particularly horrible, just green as grass. What ever gave you the silly idea that none of the farriers on this forum have ever thought of hauling a cheap 115v welder and an extension cord? Have you ever considered that most of us have had similar ideas at one time or another, then discarded them as unworkable?

By and large, the little Chinese 115v crackerboxes are as useless as teats on a boar hog, especially when compared to any gas cutting/welding outfit. With O/A, you don't need electricity and you can cut any ferrous metal, as well as weld, braze or solder steel, stainless or aluminum. When you consider name brand 115v welders, their initial cost is comparable to gas, but for about the same money, you get less versatility.

An inverter setup for fluxcore or stick is more expensive than gas and still not as versatile.

You know, if you guys keep that sand in your vaginas long enough, you'll have a pearl!

As insults go, such childish pap merely draws attention to your lack of imagination. :)

Was a guy that made up a hardy and cut clip out of 1/8" sheet steel then welded them on. Don't remember who/where but believe I saw it in the Journal some years ago. Made for nice looking clips but seem to be more work than making them the usual way..........in the box.:D
