I use them on the fronts of small cutters without a problem, but have had the same shearing affects on larger breeds used in performance events. I use them on rear, quarter clipped handmades, two on each side, and will occassionally have a back one shear. When we have a wet season, if we ever do again, I quit using them. I find they rust completely into at the junction of the shoe and sole.

I had the same problem with mx50's years ago. I switched to a more traditional E nail that has the slopping shoulder to it and the problem went away. I haven't tried the mx nails in a long time. I don't know if I would have the same problem now because most everything I do is clipped now.

I've used Mustad nails for 40 years but had to stop: The mx-60s and E5 slims are also shearing off. I don't know if it's a bad batch of steel, or the manufacturing process. I'm trying Liberty and Delta nails now...

Try save edge nails. They're pretty good so far, and a lot cheaper.

Chris,

That I know of Save Edge does not make a MX nail, I know that they used to market an E nail but no longer.

If I go into the barn I know that I have Mustard MX nails, circa 1992 and before, i.e. 1 pound and 5 pound boxes, if some one wants to compare wire with todays nails let me know .

Steve, anvil steve,

This offer is also to Mustard, gives them a chance to qualify/quantify the product.

I have often wondered how come the swedged nail has not worked in the States but worked so well in the rest of the world. Having been lucky enough to have shod horses in a number of countries and on a # of continents it has puzzled me.

Ray-

It seems the only nail style that we have had trouble with shearing is the MX series and sometimes the Combos. Those are both "slim" style nails. Quite possibly, they are being used on shoes or in conditions that they were not meant for. Many European bred horses are heavier boned and thicker walled and wear heavier shoes nailed on with standard shank nails. Hence, less likely to shear. The MX series has the slimmest shank compared to the head size of any nail. Works great on thinned walled horses wearing light shoes. Just because it drives nice does not mean it suitable on all shoes or all situations.

Steve,

exactly the reason for my response, my collection allows an immediate response/ correlation of oranges to oranges , mx's to mxs 19 years apart! or have things changed?

ps

I got combos in 1 lb boxes also!!!!

Mustad 5 SB shears on every horse I shod with them. They may not shear the shoe completely off but nails would break off. They fit the shoe perfectly but the quality is questionable for the box I was using. I've had MX50 sheer some but not like the SB.

ray it should be pointed out IMO that it could be the shoes that are the problem , back pritcheling to try and open holes can leave sharp edges , it is also common on the end of runs that the mechanical stamps and pritchels get worn and need replacing

You guys wouldn't have this problem if you would make your own nails, those ready made nails are terrible. Just more weight in your truck carrying around all those different sizes to fit this shoe or that shoe.

Brian, No problems with the Capewells when I used them, or Deltas.

Regards

I agree with deltas...to me its a darn good nail....capewells are a bit soft for my driving I quess...in a pinch I had to get some dia at the tractor supply and dang those are a hard nail and drives to the hair line..I tend to waste about half of them..but as for the dia 4 race nail I truly like that its so hard and works great for ponys...the delta race is a bit to soft and turn out to soon for my likes..

Chris,

that's a possability, but this problem has been reported to and observed by me for a # of years in a # of regions, not just with Mustards but other swedged nails.
