TOPIC: Cold forge

Cold forge 24 Jan 2006 11:25 #1

I have 2 valley Quantum forges, one in each truck. (The one in the old truck is one of the first ones they ever sold, I think it goes back to about 1990 or so)

The one in the old truck seems to heat quite fine, except the flame on the right is colder than the one on the left. I have competed out of this forge with no troubles in the past.

The newer one in the Stonewell truck is horribly cold. I even have the pressure turned up to 20-25lbs (or something higher), and it barely gets to a yellow heat. I have replaced the regulator on the tank, and the gas flow valve on the forge itself to no avail. The venturies frequently get sootie and I have to clean them out with acetone. The other thing is that this rig has the propane tank ceiling mounted, and draws off the bottom of the tank. Could this be the cause? I do open the tank vent to purge every time I get it filled up.

I have a nice new Forgemaster blacksmith in the shop, I want to put in the Stonewell truck, but if the problem is the tank, it would be foolish to ruin another forge.

Anyone have problems like this?

Does it do this with any tank?

Unhook the line from the intake on the burner... there might be a peice of teflon tape stuck their. Also, check the alignment on your ports.
just stuff to look at. Also, pull the burner bar off , remove each orifice and check for obstructions. Take a tip cleaner for your torches and clean them out.
Good luck,
Jason

Have done all that twice. How should the ports be aligned? I have cleaned all orifices, coneectors, and valves with acetone to remove the sooty oil build up but to no avail.
I may take Phil's suggestion and swap forges and see what happens.

Dianne, I have the same forge, but an old one and it runs great. A guy at the Rolex this year had a new one shipped in and the orafices were welded to the box, and it ran very poorly. On the old one, the orafices are not welded to the body on top there is a gap there which allows more O2 to reach the flame. I believe that yours might be welded to the box on top, if so, take a cutting blade for a hand grinder and just cut through that weld on top and it should run great. This is just a guess but that's what we did to the new one the other guy got.

good luck
