Nice work Andy. I like the shape and your nail holes look nice and consistent. I clip some of my fronts between #1 and #2. I think the toe nails should come back out of the toe a bit and the heel nails are a little too far back. Your heel check is long and should come closer to the center of the stock. Try forging both sides equaly towards the center, flattening it out from the foot side then working the inside of the check just slightly.

I usualy keep my shoes on when forging. :D

Is that Kevin's old anvil?

Roy,
Thanks for the pointers. I have a lot of trouble making good heels. My process is that I hammer the outside corner of the heel into itself over the horn of the anvil and then hammer the inside corner into itself on the face of the anvil to attempt to make a nice checked heel. I think it's the way that Bob Marshall builds heels except his come out a lot prettier. :D
I wasn't forging when I took the picture. Just taking pictures. That's dirt on my sock if anyone's wondering.
Yes, that was Kevin's anvil. $800 for both the stand and anvil. Corey Minnick got his other one that had a bumping block on it.
What's your heels building process and how many heats.
Thank you.

I do it the same way Bob teaches. Maby you're letting the hammer come in at too low an angle? You want to be pushing that inside corner back up the branch. Try and think about making sure your elbow isn't locked. If it is you can't reach around with the hammer to drive the corners back in.

The goal should be three heats for that shoe.

When driving the inside corner how come it seems so uncomfortable? It's not solid hitting at all. Thanks.

Andrew

When are you building your heels?

I find it pretty solid, hammer face should be going to your left knee (if your right handed). I also think you are coming in too flat, like Roy said.

Im right handed. If your to pull the inside corner back wouldn't you need hit more towards your waist? more square to the stock? I'll have to practice some more to see if I can work through this. Thanks for the advice. it's appreciated.

The knee works for me. Everyone is different. I don't pull it back, I forge it back in. Instead of a long heel check like yours mine are shorter and leave a little more material in the heel.

Hit more on the end of the heel than on the corner

I'm not real good at articulating, I explain better eye to eye.

I will have to go into the shop and take some pics and see if my wife or one of my kids will post them for me.

I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.

Here is a picture of the heels. No grinding, rasping, or brushing just picked up off the floor.

Here is a 3/8 by 3/4 concave left hind. Been working on my heels on these too. I've got some 5/16 concave that has been like turning licorice.
