Picked these up at a farm sale. Jaws are about four inches and spring steel. Im thinking they are a dental tool ?maybe hoof testers. There has not ben a smith on the place for as long as anyone can remember but there was a lot of fullers and tongs so there pretty old. Any ideas ?regardless there hoof testers now.

Judging by the shape and the size a can holder would be my bet. Maybe the guy when he made them considered the continuous heating and cooling of the tool and considered a better quality steel for the job, so the tongs would outlive him? Wich apparently they did........

I use similar shaped tongs when forging large billets under the power hammer. With the spring steel I can make them much lighter weight than with mild steel. Less weight=less fatigue=more control

All good possibilities. Concerns of steel becoming brittle have led me to think milder steels as a better choice for tongs but I guess he a person was diligent about cooling it would not be a problem.

Ray, the habit to get into with spring steel tongs is to dip them in the water BEFORE you pick up hot steel NOT after; they are then allowed to air cool a little before you could quench them at a critical temp.

i've been using light weight tongs since I took a class in industrial forging yrs ago from Steve Parker. Steve's everyday forge work consists of 40lb billets under a 2500lb hammer; his tongs look like chop sticks; all made from 5160(spring stock)

that's probably a habit I should pick up. Ben using the smell of burning hide as reminder to cool my tongs for too long. Red. Good plan might try them on my new helper.
