The thing to be careful of is where to put the small bits of steel from the result of pritcheling the shoe. Wherever they are placed will then have a hole in it.

Not sure. Maybe with an air hammer?

I was given an old Centaur Forge 125 Pound anvil. I would never choose this type, flat horn, narrow face, but a nice big clop horn. It will be kinda fun to play with and the kid will learn to work it as he'll have to start his business with it.

Rachel,
the thing about anvils is, you just have to be a bit smarter than the anvil, but du mb enough to have one. Don't call your self a genius when using it either. Wile E. Cyotee claimed that to bad results.

I recently located my first anvil Rachel - a unique custom EVERS1 - about 20 KG - note the carefully crafted ridges on the horn. Even working cold, a shoe stays where it is placed. I built it while a poor starving student about 50 years ago and shaped a good many shoes on it. I could probably get it cheap for you - there is the matter of shipping cost though. Note no hardy or pritchel holes to mar it's beauty, although the edges were a bit soft.

Now in spite of my best intentions, I likely won't live forever and this piece of art will only get more valuable when I'm gone. Don't miss the opportunity.

Jack, that is indeed priceless, I can't believe you would even consider parting with it! Is that solid, or a piece of C section? I have a customer with a massive sized anvil-shaped-structure that is actually hollow section - she offered for me to use it to shape the size 8 k'hearts for her horses. A very kind offer for sure.:D

I look on my first anvil, which was not at all dis-similar to this one, with an equal mix of gratitude and mild disgust - no offense intended to yours Jack! I also have a replica of tthat stand that is in use currently which I reserve the same emotions for...... What would such a beauty go for these days I wonder? Put it on eBay and you might be pleasantly surprised! Lol.

Jack, you could have taken an angle grinder to clean up the edges made by the cutting torch??:D

Oh no, those engineered torch edges help that Anvil Shaped Object stay cooler thus maintaining the heat treat.

It's solid. Went to the salvage yard looking for a section of rail and found that piece of bar (2-1/2 by 3-1/2 I think). 10 cents/pound about 40 pounds and I was in business.

Gave it away about 30 years ago. helping a friend do something last year, asked if he had an anvil. He said no, but his neighbor did and there it was.
