TOPIC: Made a new shoeing box today

Made a new shoeing box today 17 May 2011 03:54 #1

Made a new shoeing box today. I've been wanting something light weight for a long time and designed this, with all the tools in it, can't weigh more than 15lbs. Might make a few adjustments if I ever build another....but it's pretty sturdy, holds all the tools well and it rolls nice. Plus for about $30.00 in my costs, it sure as heck saved me from spending a couple hundred on a new one. Fits good on the truck too.

Since the pics were taken, I've added a bin for my nails and will be putting magnets on the sides for my rasps tomorrow, I've also dipped the handle in rubber. Havent decided what to do about my knives yet, but I've more than enough space with the two trays (may have made it a tad wide for my needs)....just haven't figured out how to make a good knife holder yet.

I've seen some like that made from copper pipe, even came close to making one more than a few times. In the end I bought a Cobra, then another after wearing that one out. Athough, with tools, my box is considerably heavier seeing as I shoe foot wavers, I carry about every hand tool you can think of, plus drill with a buffer and a pair of bolt cutters at most stops.

It's a nice idea, I just hope that the PVC doesn't prove too weak for your application. (sorry if it's not, but that's sure what it looks like) Fortunately if a horse does get it stuck on them it should come off easily enough, albeit in pieces.

Hopefully it will at least get you going long enough to buy/fabricate something a little more sturdy.

It is PVC, pretty thick PVC. The only reason I decided to try it was due to weight and if a horse knocked into it it shouldn't do much if any damage. I had a pretty heavy big one that MFC made and I just hated it. For 30 bucks I figured I could give it a shot, if it doesnt hold up well, I'm not out much.

I may be getting stiffer as the years go on but that's a long way to bend over for a knife. Great idea though if you don't like a knife in your apron.

Yes, old fella, I took the pockets off my apron, to save weight. It had two pockets, and it was just too much for me to carry around.

I just throw the knives on the ground when I'm just trimming and don't need the whole box :D.

LMAO!!! Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! Calling him old when you can't carry around the weight in of your knife.

Hey Rick,,, I used to lay my knives on the ground until a 2300 lb draft stepped on and $ 80.00 knife and I had just bought it 3 days earlier. I broke the habit real quick and put tools back in their holders.
:D

my 2 cents worth ;)

The best things about the good old days -- I wasn't good and I wasn't old.

The older I get, the more horses I shoe, the fewer things that I can absolutely, positively fix.

It was all in the name of efficiency, Joey. I no longer use the apron, either. I was just too heavy. Rasped my knee once but now I'm more careful.

Bruce, I just throw my cheap knife on the ground, my good one I carry between my teeth.

I carry my rasp in one sock, nippers in the other. Hoof pick behind my ear.

Now, before things get totally misunderstood here, my picture (post 6) was posted in response to the OP's statement that she hadn't figured out a good way to make a knife holder for her/his box yet.

My posts 8 and 12 were totally in jest, for anyone who might have taken them seriously.

For the record:
I wear an apron when I'm working on a horse, and my knives are in the pockets on either leg. I don't carry one between my teeth, nor do I carry tool in my socks or behind my ears. :D

I would never throw my $120.00 Ringel hoof knife or my $45.00 Hall loop knife on the ground. The pockets on the side of the tool box is where I keep them for transport, so they don't get nicked up rattling around in the tool box.

I was just poking a little fun at ya. For a while I didn't use the pockets on my apron, here the last couple years I have been using my apron pockets, but I am constantly trying to put both knives in the same pocket. (either knife, either pocket, I don't like to discriminate, lol) I at least stopped throwing them in the bottom shelf of the box and losing track of them.

I bought 2 sheaths from Tractor Supply, originally meant for linemans pliers on electricians tool belts, riveted them to the side of my Cobra over my rasps. They work great, but I have since bought a new box and never transferred them or bought new ones.
