Michael, I use a hoof stand for the hind legs that the cradle is similiar to the hoof jack but the base is different. It is home made, copied it from the one my mentor has used for 36 years, have been using mine for 18 years, and never had any problems. I don't use it on yearling. It is a very simple design and I can move it out from under me and the horse without moving my body. Will try and get a picture uploaded.

Uncle Nick always had one of the lads hold the hinds for him in German leg restraint.

Whenever uncle Nick needed a stool he'd have one of the lads get down on all 4's. Much safer than that ****** thing.

long over dew.. i wanted to use the smallest foot i could find.. this is a 00 size hind.. three weeks from last trim.. i had a poney blow up on me due to wind the other day.. lesson learned... be aware of **** that can fly into the horse.. i was using this stand and aside from my tools being thrown and a broken leadrope all went well. i hope these pictures can help to beter understand how i handle some hind feet.

Biggest problem I see with something like that is the fact that a horse could very well get a hoof stuck in between the bars?? In a wreak, steel bends and if a horse got his leg hung in that it would be ugly??

It's a lot smaller than it looks in your original post. The thing I don't like about the hoofjack is that the limb can still flex in the cradle. Your stand seems to offer much more stability.

As far as safety, I've even seen the cradle on a hoofjack get over a horses pastern. (00 foot but without incident) I think it would take a pretty severe event to get that over a foot but the unfinished ends still scare me. I'd be more inclined to forge a loop into the end of the feet.

i guess i should have posted a picture from the top down. i bent the material so the bars are on top are not parrellel. it starts out small then opens to about maybe two inches.. i do see the point that if something happened, the bars may open but its highly unlikly. thanks for the concern though... makes sence and i will watch closer .and as far as forging loops on the feet thats a great idea..

I agree it's smaller than the first pics made me believe it was. What I'd be looking for is where a small foot could get stuck and jerk the thing around hurting the horse or worse the people around it with the extensions you use to keep your feet on. I'd try and find that spot and prevent a foot getting stuck in it by adding a bar. I guess I would also reduce the size on the feet of the stand. They look pretty big to me.

I don't agree it's "clearly" unsafer than a regular hoofstand, in fact I kinda like it. It holds the foot better, it won't wobble when rasping, when nailing you don't have to worry about getting the nails in the cloth cradling the foot. The height adjustment is more tricky on this one though.

Thanks for the pics.

Is that a bumper that goes on a boat trailer? That's a pretty good idea. I'm making a new hoofstand this week, and might have to steal that from you. :D

edit to add: although I almost never use a cradle on a back hoof, I like to have it as an option.

im curious... how many of you use a hind hoof stand?? such as a hoof jack or hoof it stand? or have you made your own version? i use this one and it helps more than i can express. im new to the business so i get horses that no one wants and it seems like they calm down when i use my stand. just yesterday i had a colt that had never been trimmed and he seemed to even fall asleep. he would fight me until he felt his hoof on my stand then he'd relax. im just curious what you all do???

I call this the Kick Bock ,you just kick it about ,sort of flip it with the foot ,Two in one ,no Danger light and very easy to make...

Works for me the tennis *****(projectile) are replaced when needed Just ned a client in a tennis club..the cradle has not been any problem eveyday all day for 6 years almost..

Note the mini stand kick three

Ray,
