I've used a horse head driving hammer for the last ten years - they come already cross-hatched like that from the manufacturer.

Doesn't really score up the nail heads at all.

But I did borrow a mate's hammer that wasn't cross hatched... apart from the different balance, it didn't feel any different really.

IOW probably unecessary.
Made my first tacking on hammer that I'm still using with the help of my father in my first year & the two others I still use when I was in the second year of my apprenticeship.have been tempted to buy one of those etched faced hammers. just to give them a try . but after picking it up I put it back down . a little voice in my head says every time, there wont be the same pride driving a nail with that hammer . hence I've never tried one. might sound silly to some that buy all there tools, but you do feel better using a tool you made, when its been made well & proper.

A magnet on the bottom of the handle seems pretty handy to me. That's a slick idea I never would have thought of. That's the kind of thing I wanted this thread to expose, the little tricks that no one thinks other people would be interested in hearing about.

Thanks
David

They're call "pencil magnets" from "The magnet source". Available @ Ace hardware for about $10. They're REALLY strong.

I re-profiled the head on my crease nail puller, since it obviously wasn't meant to grab the heads on any nails known to man, and the head was far too thick. (the tool's head, not mine<by "tool", I mean the crease nail puller!>)

I have a bad habit of jumbling up my work area, and losing stuff. I stuck a ceramic magnet on the side of the forge that I stick my tongs to and one on the side of my box that keeps track of the cowboy prozac. (Copenhagen) ;) You can see it in my smile!

I rap my hammer handles with tennis racket grip. It has a ton of grip now and takes alot more of the shock out.
