Sort of yes ...The thing is that clips here in germany have become a big thing and seem to be seen as Evil in clients eyes after being told how they effect the hoof....
These seem to come from BUA round table talkers...that have never shoed a horse ever...

Smitty, what happened to your pics? They are mostly deleted on this thread. :(

Yep, I have heard the same. Some clients dont want them and barefooters dont even need to know how or why, they think they are part of the shoeing evil. A few of my barefoot clients are now interested in natural balance shoes.

I will admit a bob punch isnt for me for my level. Somehow, i thought it would be easier. A clip starter is a pain and just not the ideal. I caved in and ordered a flatland forge clipping cone hammer since my cross pien has seen better days.

Alan, I think you will enjoy the Jim Poor hammer. The cone hammer takes a bit more hammer control but keep after it and it wont take long to get the hang of.

I was having trouble today clipping shoes. I was out shoeing with a friend and couldn't get it down right. I tried to pull some clips on a pair of old diamonds in my friends truck.

Tomorrow I might try it with the forge lit. ;)

I will agree with it takes hammer control...they call me lightin never hit in the same spot twice ...I got frustrated and knocked the handle out of it and put it on another hammer...may need to have another go with it...

I have had this same hammer you speak of for 8monts now and I'm still learning to use it. The tip of the cone is almost too narrow but I'm getting the hang of it.

I've got one of those hammers too. Its true, if you want clips to be easy you have to hit the same spot to get a nice source. I watched a guy from NM that was at my certification forge nice uniform clips with my hammer. He hit the same spot to get a great source, the rest of the clip was easy. I came home and learned to make his clips. Its just my opinion but think of how the cone point makes contact with the steel. If your source holes are crooked you probably need to raise your arm/shoulder to get the point coming down.

Clips are all about hammer control. Thats why most contest shoes have them. Its you last modification when your arm is tired and you need to slow down for a second and think about it.

I guess that most guy and gals pull better clips at the start of the day then the end of the day. But its all about repetition and forging a lot. I think the average farrier should be able to shoe two or more horses a day in handmades without "running out of gas". Especially if they are taking the CJF soon.
