Mikel, I'm kinda funny I guess. I'm a lot harder on the tools I make than store bought ones. I figure I can make another pretty easy, and cheap.

Hi all,

Easier yet go down to where you buy tools and buy a couple starter punches and forge them into pritchels cuz they are good steel and already half way to being a pritchel.

I went down to the hardware store and bought an ordinary mason's chisel for a couple of quid and shaped it into a pritchel. Works fine. :)

I made one of mine out of an old punch, one out of a ratchet handle.

I use them more than my Bloom pritchels.

Theres a grain store that sells pritchels for $6. Some off brand. No idea what kind of metal, but I bought two. Reworked one as a center punch and the other has just been sitting there waiting for me to do something with it.

Ray... I'm going to try Smitty's technique this weekend, with the weather looking to hit 68 degrees I'll actually enjoy being outside banging on the anvil. Hey, do you still sell those attachable leather pockets?

Sean,

don't just bang on you anvil, waste of energy and you might damage it! put the leaf spring in the fire and show the results,
yes I still have them.

I have been around shoe making and tool making for a while now and have never heard of a starter punch. What is it?

I guess you need to decide how long you want your pritchel. 10 inches of steel is going to draw out to a pretty long pritchel. I usually forge the round stock somewhat square to start with then the tool is not rolling off of the tool tray or where ever you lay it down.

Hi all,

Like a center punch but with a round flat end. So easy to make a pritchel.

made all but one of my pritchels a Mustad
I used car coil springs
after cutting a few rings from sprping then heat n straightening them they were reheated to nice even red and shaped
ground to basic finish and air cooled
I reheated them to temper and quenched them in auto tramsmition oil
I made two stud punches as well their good O too the lot cost me nothing and Ive plenty more springs to make more
none of em real pritty but the work ok and I just give em a tidy up with the hammer now n then and sometimes a lick on the belt sander

unfortunately I never got around to finding some leaf springs, so I used some regular bar stock. The final pics are of a new Bloom Forge pritchel, a re-tooled Bloom pritchel, and my attempt at a homemade pritchel...

Sean,

Now punch a few holes, or back punch some nail holes, see how your sizing is, how your material of choice holds up, then make another, and a fore punch. find some spring material or rebar and do the same and compare. Keep trying different stuff, reinvent the wheel, remember how the different steels acted and reacted.

have a good one,

Hi all,

I've made a lot of knives out of leaf springs - usually it's 5160 steel I think. It contains a bit of chromium so it is "semi-stainless." If you want a harder tool ( 55 - 60 rockwell ), oil quench the 5160 in about 100 degree F oil. I use olive oil, which doesn't flash like a petroleum product. I have heard of some folks using transmission fluid, but have never tried that. You can draw the temper back by baking it @ 350 - 400 for an hour, or just quench the tip and let the rest of the tool cool slowly by placing it point down in vermiculite, sand, ashes, etc. It's pretty simple and I think you might like the results.
