I have used round coil springs for the same thing. The ones I made three or four years ago I still use. In fact I made one, gave it to a good friend of mine who used it to pass his Danish Farrier's Exam with. You can find good bits of quality steel out there for free if you look!!

The one I made for Rick was from tool steel which took a lot of work pounding that stuff out. But they are good ones!!

I think it depends what work your giving it
if your making 3/4 set a day or just cleaning out holes

or putting the odd nail-hole in
no matter what quality of steel is in the pritchel

they all have to be dressed on a regular basis
if been worked
# maybe the cheaper stuff more often

what i find with young lads more times
they catch the edge of the square hole or the round hole

with the pritchen knocking the corners off

an other problem not dipping the pritchel in any greece

adding to the problems

I also think when you take the time to make your own, one is more careful with them. I know I take that extra half second to make sure I am lined up in the hardy hole, also I keep the bee's wax handy. It makes them slide out easier also.

Do you guys think that 10" of 5/8" H-13 is too much for a finished pritchel? I'm ordering some from Centaur this week and I'm gonna make some punches and a pritchel.

Mikel, I'm kinda funny I guess. I'm a lot harder on the tools I make than store bought ones. I figure I can make another pretty easy, and cheap.

Well Joey, after you have pounded out some tool steel, finished, buffed, polished a pritchel, then you will think twice about how hard you are on them. Much easier to buy one.

Here's a link to a set I made. I use them all the time, but I don't abuse them!!

Hey Smitty, nice photos in your Album. Why not do an Album devoted to a step-by-step fabrication demo?

I hope everyone know that the Albums allows Comments to be posted for the photos, allowing specific questions and discussion.

RE:shoes by wilhem... pritchels 03 Mar 2009 01:50 #29

I'm certainly no Smitty, but I was taught a system for punching/pritcheling that works.
On flat steel plain- forge the heel, turn the branch. I'll then do the toe nail one hit to set, then three good hits till its deep, cool the tool, the then the heel nail with the same pattern of blows. cool the tool, then split the difference for the middle nail. (same pattern). Work out the frog eyes flat to the horn, then angle the shoe and work the back edge with the hammer and the inside edge with the horn then flip and work the ground edge with the hammer and the opposite inside edge with the horn. Go to the face and hit each nail hole lightly once with the stamp. Pritchel the toe nail (correct pitch) and quench the tool. Heel nail prtichel( minimal to no pitch depending on the foot) quench the tool then pritchel the middle nail with medium pitch. rework sole pressure. takes longer to read it than it does to do it.
Concave does not require the frog eye run nor the second whack with the stamp. I just pritchel (in the same pattern) after I stamp the holes. Then hammer finish very lightly.
hope that helps.
Jason

Na, just trying to make sure Smitty don't find my truck. He uses leaf springs to make his tools. If he comes over here to do a clinic he might be looking for materials. :)
