You charge only for the amount of material used? What about the tube failures?
Jeff,

I've never had a failure while under a horse, but it is not often that I use Vettec material. I only have one horse on my book that requires such material. She is due within the next two weeks.

I have in the past had a tube explode because it became too hot. I do round up the price of my tubes to make some money, rather than just break even.

Many times I am happy to use some of the material before it goes bad, so I probably don't charge as much as most.

That would make sense. With all of the "pieces" I end up with I run into some tube failures due to leakage. Overall they make good product and it is easy to use.

So you buy a tube, mark it up 50% and resell the material. Do you charge sales tax on the product then if applicable? I would think this is in a grey area that my particular state would sure like their share.

I charge $15/pair for the extra time, labor and knowledge to properly apply said appliance.

You only have to pay sales tax ONCE on a product or material. If you paid tax on it when you purchased it, you're all set.

I'm sorry, I was not trying to convey the attitude that I do not want to be bothered by other similar posts. I was just responding to Gary's comment about this topic being mentioned before. What I ment was that I do not have that much time to sit and do much browsing of this site to find similar topics. However I did find a little about vettec pricing but it has no where near the posts as we do on this thread. Also I started this thread and in my first original post not only did I mention the pricing of vettec applications, I asked about prices for the nolan hoof plate as well.

I recently used a Nolan Hoof Plate that had been kicking around in the truck for a couple of years,( I think it was given to me at a Myhre conference), to repair a client's sagging paddock gate. It was a 52 degree plate affixed with 8 sheetrock screws and a bit of a leftover Adhere tube. The application appears to be completely successful. I did not charge for the service as I considered it "experimental" in nature.

Hope this helps.;)

If you're doing retail sales you would normally have a tax exempt number, buy at wholesale without paying sales tax, re-sell and charge sales tax on the retail price.

I don't sell equipack. I pay sales tax where applicable when I purchase it (at retail price) and I don't resell it, but rather, I am the end user. It's materials/supplies just like nails, shoes or pads. It's obviously appropriate to consider the cost of materials when pricing a job because the idea is to make profit...on which I pay income tax. The government is getting their share.

Then why do I have to pay tax when I buy a used car?

You paid sales tax on the original amount, how about the markup for your client if it is invoiced as a sale?

I guess I was just pointing out that I try to be careful how things are invoiced, in case of an audit I want everything to be pretty clear. I am not reselling these things, they are supplies in the course of doing my business. I wonder what the state auditor would say to the people who charge an extra $5 for a set of new shoes over a reset. That would look like they are selling the shoes for $5 to someone not in the industry, wouldn't it?

you have already charged the tube off to a previous customer, so there is no cost of the tube. What is your instaltion fee?
Jeff, sorry I did not answer sooner I missed this. If I only have a small project and I have a used tube then I usually only charge to install. For the most part you use whats left in a tube then open another one to finish the job. So there is a charge for a new tube.

As for instaltion fee, $10-$20 depending on the situation.

Fifty dollars a pair. Soon to go up because of increase in price of product.

Why on earth would anyone ever consider using the Nolan Hoof Plate on a horses foot?

Rather than install the nolan hoof plate at mikes suggested price of $150 per foot I would suggest you use a roll of equicast for hoofwall reinforcement. You will get the same or better biomechanics at a lower cost with less installaiton time.

Take a roll of equicast ($15.75 from meader supply) mark it up by 1.75 = $28 for materials. For time take your hourly rate X the 5 minutes it will take you to prep and wrap the foot. At $90/hour it would be $7.20.

Per foot about $35 for time and materials to equicast the foot. If you are really on a budget I was talking to Dr Michael Steward this morning and at his shop they regularly get 2 feet out of one roll. He said you just have to work fast as there is only 1 minute of set up time at room temp. We discovered yesterday that at 15 degrees you have much more working time.

www.equicast.us has a bunch of information.
