Acid Bath ??

I use to own a file sharpening business and we use to use Muriatic acid and a fine silicone sand to blast and re sharpen. Dirty and noisy process, but worked fairly well. It's been so long I forget how long we immerse the rasps in acid, so won't just guess a number.

Ray, it wouldn't be great reading but I've been blessed to make a living doing the things that I enjoy. That makes the job so much less of a job, doesn't it.:D
All the best.

I have been sharpening my rasps daily for the last decade.
I average 12 to 15 rasps per year and carry well over 200 horses on my books. (semi retired)

I use a 70 ply cotton wheel and black emery compound.

Slowly draw the rasp towards you on the underside of the wheel in the direction of the teeth from tang to end. Working your way across the width of the rasp.

Bellota Classics seem to sharpen up the best.
Rasps with more upright teeth will not sharpen as well and tear the wheel up.

I won't use a new rasp out of the box without sharpening it first! :)

Bob, that's very interesting, Why? I know that the "safe edge" rasps I use out of the box are so darn sharp I end up with skin chips on my fingers for a week or so of use. Ya I know, been doing it long enough to avoid this but can't seem to. Even the "Wood Miller" rasps get me, and believe it or not, I'm not a clumsy person. :D

I had the same problem with the Save Edge rasps. My hands would hurt so bad at the end of the day I couldn't grab my wives cheeks to kiss her hello!
I didn't like the file side on the Save Edge rasps.

The Bellota classics are not that sharp out of the box, but with daily sharpening they will last a good while. (after sharpening they will grab your fingers as well)
I prefer the Classics for dressing feet and finishing. The file side leaves a smooth finish and less marks in the feet.

Just a thought about the bellotta, If I am not mistaken they are hardened all the way through while others are just surface hardened. Maybe that is why they sharpen up better. Any thoughts?

John, are you still using save egde rasps the last few months the ones i have been getting have been terrible, definitely not the same . i don't know whats happened to them but i can't seem to find any good ones anymore. i quit buying them a box at a time, i buy them one at a time now trying to find a good one. i went to a feed mill that sells some supplies and they had a old box with 3 rasps left in it . they were good but other then them i can't find any decent ones.

You can get black emery compound at most tool supply stores. Some Farrier supply houses as well.

You can find it online at: www.jantzsupply.com
