I make my own knives.
I can use better steel (A2), shape the blade as I like, and make them fit my hand.

Really nice work Bob !!

For those of you using the JH hoof knives they are made by Jim Hurlburt here in northern Vermont. (Stowe)
The hook you mentioned I first saw on a knife used by Gene Ovenichek.
Shortly after that Jim was producing them with it.
Now he may have made the knife and presented it to Gene, I really don't know who came up with the idea.

Jims handles are what sell me. They fit my big hands and give me the leverage to use the knife with little to no stress or work.
(I am most likely going to make my own handles in the future and put it on the Knife blade to save on the cost.)

I also like the knife and have two of them. ( I have been using them since Jim first showed me his knife when he started.)
They are very expensive, but worth and value, is something we all decide for ourselves.

I have used the "KNIFE clasic" for years and have 3 of them in my truck.

Having tried other knives I keep coming back to the above one's mentioned.

my 2 cents worth ;)

I make some of my own. I don't know if the steel is better than the store baughts because I don't know what steel is used in all of them.

I've been using 1095 for hoof knives because I have a bunch of 1/8 X 1 stock and it's good blade steel. I've been using walnut for the handles because I have a bunch of it.

I also buy some knives. I buy whatever I come accross that looks to my liking and isn't too expensive.

I even carry some frosts. They're ok and I run into plenty of gravel and sand so I try to save the "good" knives and abuse the cheapies.

WOW!

You do drop dead gorgeous work. I'm especially impressed by your fitting of handle to blade, it's more reminiscent of the fitting of the barrel of a good shotgun to its stock than that of a knife to its handle - your attention to detail is damned impressive. Kudos!

I'd be very interested to know why you chose A-2 instead of something like L-6?

Bob made me a knife last year. Been using it everyday and I really like it. Holds an edge, trims the frog nice and the handle fits my hand really nice. He does really nice work.

I, too, have used the JH Forge knives for a few years now.....can't find anything that I like better...... They are Jim's creation.... he makes a ripper of an abcess/searcher kinfe!

Hold an edge well....... the hoof pick is handier than pockets in your underwear!

Thank you, that is a real compliment! :)

I started making knives using 1095 and wasn't happy with the results.
I use A2 because heat treating is simple and it holds a good edge.

My good friend Shayne Carter told me about A2. It is the steel of choice for his knives as well.

I don't sell knives, just make them for fun.
I make them for auctions, gifts, etc.

If you come visit, you will probably leave with a knife and have a pretty good idea how to start making them. :D
