During the war of Northern Aggression, when a northern force went through a town, among the things that they always destroyed was the local smithy.
It would cripple the ability to pose any threat to the advancing army.

I have to agree about the flat horned anvil as a boat anchor. I used just that to moor my Star racing boat in Setaucket Harbor. It worked much better as an anchor than it did to shape shoes on...

I am forever amazed at all the talk about the price of an anvil.

I figure after you make a Million dollars off of an anvil, you can probably afford to purchase a new one! :D:D

Bob,
What make do you use for the Forge/Shop
i'm thinking of buying one for the forge

I'm thinking about 800 Euros

Hello John,

The 91 kg Kohlswa is a good anvil that would fit in your price range.
I have the A1 pattern. I don't know about the availability in Ireland.

I have a 88 kg Brooks that I bought back in 1985 after going to the International and having trouble drawing the branch of my roadster on that thick heeled son of a gun. It has been a good anvil and held up well.

It really comes down to personal preference.

To answer your question, any anvil that you like of good dimensions.

Very true Bill.

It was also believed that the Fisher Anvil company for a time manufactured some anvils without the familiar eagle trademark which were intended for sale in the south.

For your reading pleasure this is what Jock over on Anvilfire says about the union busting up anvils in the south.

"Good stories have a way of proliferating: I KNOW the fellow (Bobby Dobson of Virginia Beach) that started the story about Northern sappers and Southern anvils. It was an idea looking for facts in the 1980's. He asked me (as an expert) if it was plausible and we had a long discussion about it. But there has NEVER been any supporting evidence yet I hear reenactors and and various smiths tell it as if it were fact and CLAIM there is proof in a long lost soldier's diary. There is not. Paw-Paw was one of the worst and *I* was the one that told him about it INCLUDING the fact that it was an idea looking for proof. But it was such a good story that he just HAD to tell it as true."

Occaisionally, on welded up, wrought anvils the horn will separate from the main body due to an incomplete weld. (Often due to too much sledge not enough anvil.) I've own 2 over time (a Columbus and a Trenton) Nobody ever seems to have the separated horn though. A story that came with one was that a cheated on wife, cut the horn off, her soon to be, exhusband's favorite shoeing anvil. Good story, just not truth.

There was not much need for the Northern aggressors to wreck anvils and shops due to the fact that Southern iron production had pretty well halted before 1864, due to the Naval blockade.

It obviously makes sense to disrupt the enemies supply lines. I'm but I haven't seen any evidence to support the idea that there was a concerted military effort to knock the horns or heels off anvils.

It doesn't even sound reasonable given that it would be a lot of work for something that would have little or no effect.

Brian,
Shoeing of horses and repair of essential equipment can be done without iron production. A few assignments required to graduate the old Ft Riley school was making shoes out of twisted baling wire as well as forge welding worn out shoes together to make new ones. It is perfectly probable that much of this occured as the anti-American treasonous rebellion was being put down by our proud and esteemed patriots.:D

It is common knowledge that blacksmith shops were military target #1. When this is the only industry a people have it must be taken out. In addition, feed warehouses, barns, silo's just about anything useful to the enemy was burned and destroyed. See the Shenandoah campaign as well as Sherman's march. Most of Virginia was left literally as destroyed as Germany after WWII.
