leather hides for pads 07 Nov 2008 21:53 #1

does anyone on here buy cow hides to save money on leather pads? I'm trying to find some suppliers/ prices. i know of one place in the northeast but they're prices seem expensive.

The process is unique to horse pads and soles of human shoes.
Ray Steele on our board here makes pads and can help you out I'm sure.

Tandy leather sells hides of all different weights. I've baught from shoe repair shops too. I wouldn't say it's cheap though.

I have gone to leather shops before, and gotten some of their s**** leather and made pads out of it. Some shops will just give you the stuff, while others want to charge full price.

I used to have a client who made leather saddlebags for Harley's. He had enough heavy sc rap to give me all that I could use.

I do it, I have leftover junk from other things and I use that, it sure isn't quote cheaper if your time is worth anything. Also you may choose to seal them as well with leather waterproofer, store bought pads seem to repel more water. I buy from Tandy Leather Factory great people.

I get bends from a vendor in Oregon, but I don't know that they are cheaper than pre cut pads.

I think that you will find a dollar savings in leather bends or sides but remember there is also a labor and shipping cost. The labor to you the user, the shipping because of the xtra work required to prepare a bend for UPS.

I base the above on some quick calculations.

I measured a large 12 to 13 iron sole leather bend. An iron is 1/48th of an inch, so it would be approx. 1/4" thick. it was roughly 31 inches by 67 inches. A #6 pad is approx 7.25 " x 6.75 ". After the multiplication and division ,I can safely get 21.5 pr or 43 pcs of #6 size leather pads and probably a few #3 size pads and scr ap .

Looking at the average selling price per pound of the bend ,about $8.35/lb. times the total pounds of the bend 19.1 lbs that bend would sell for $159.50.

21.5 pr of #6 pads into the $159.50 bend give a pair of #6 xheavy pads at $7.41/pr The same site that I used to look up the bend price sells #6 xheavy pads by the 12 pr bundle for $8.45/pr or 21.5 pr at $181.67.

The savings per pair at these # is $22.17. The added savings is the possible few pair of smaller pads that can be obtained and if you can use pieces of sc rap for shims and wedges. Keep in mind that I used #6 pad size as a template, thinner leather ie 7/8 iron etc often times is on smaller square inch bends.

I always found the 5" and or 6"strips gave me the best yield, since it allowed me to turn and twist shoes to get the best use. Cut pads have become a convenience, and a time saver to many. Time being money, the individual will have to do his/her own #.

The other issue to remember is that all leather is not alike, the tanning process is like horseshoeing, different for different uses and regions.

If you decide to use leather always be sure to use the best leather available. What you are looking for is the same quality they use for soles of shoes. Poor quality leather leaves your shoes dangling in two weeks, gets crushed in the heels lowering the PA with a degree or more.

A leather pad is way more expensive than plastics. If you want to save money buy plastic.

And for the ones that did not know, after tacking the leather pad to the shoe, be sure to soak the pad in water. (I throw mine in the bucket that holds my cooling water) Apply the shoe and pad thoroughly soaked for best results.

Thats good to know Ron, what is the reason behind this though? Expansion and shrinkage of leather?

If it's good quality leather moisture won't have an effect on it other than make it a bit more pliable. The way when shod the leather will form to the foot a more and it makes nailing easier too!

Once on the foot, I think pads will get wet soon enough. Leather always forms to the foot which is one reason I like it.

I don't know what you mean by making it easier to nail but I drill all my pads so they don't get in the way when nailing anyway...and I go through quite a bit of leather.

i'll have to try soaking the pad first. thanks for the input. we use leather pads alot for the drafts and i was just looking for a cheaper alternative since i'm just starting to shoe a couple on my own. starting to carry an inventory and having no money stinks!
