This is the fifth thread in the "Tool Collection" series. If you haven't already, check out the earlier threads for more tools from Bob Armstrongs collection in Bethel, Ohio (clermont county).

Here's a close-up of a Diamond made draft shoe, complete with the calk holes for various traction devices.

If you missed my earlier description, Bob finishes these old shoes by cleaning with a wire-wheel, then coating with a 50/50 mix of heated turpentine and linseed oil. Allow to cool, then wipe off the excess and allow to dry. The finish is a really nice, dark brown patina.

This shoe has a 'clip' facing straight out... some kind of toe extension or was it meant to be pulled up at 90* for a toe clip? I don't know.

Bob gave me this shoe as a gift. Nice guy!

Here's a similar shoe with various calks loosely installed. You would peen the stud on the foot surface to lock in the calks facing the direction you wanted.

This version has a regular toe clip.

A few more shots of a hammer/punch/swadge collection. Back in the blacksmith cabin.

Same rack, different angle.

This collection is in the main barn. Lots of ballpeins, more nippers and a few claw hammers.

Shoe Boards and a harness/buckle collection

The bar shoe on the upper left has a split, convex bar. This allows the heels to move independently of one another while allowing the bar to offer very passive support to a prolapsed frog.

Look at the shoe on the lower left. Notice how far back the heel nails are!

A few draft shoes with various heel and toe calks. Nice collection/display.

Bob enjoys the harness aspects of his collection. He uses old "hames" (collars) to create wall-hanging mirrors and sells them. I bought two of these mirrors and recommend you do to! I'll show the mirror later. For now, here's a collection of harness buckles and rings he has.

Well, you can't have a blacksmith/farrier collection without a good lot of miniature anvils, can you? Bob has a few.

And more.... note the primitive stake-anvil. 3rd row down, on the right.

Awesome Mark.
I have the same shoe in my truck, for display.
The one with the holes and the sharp studs.
It is what was called sharp shoeing and was used on many a logging horse in years past.
They used to bring their logs down the hillsides onto the lakes up here and these shoe's gave them the type of traction they needed.
It also cut many a horses pastern area's in the process.

I also have the wrench that was used to remove the studs.

my 2 cents worth ;)

Bob has a collection under a glass-topped counter. Here's a shot of what's inside.

The wood scrolling tools are interesting. So was the foldable 6 inch, brass rule with a slide-out caliper. I bought it!

See the tiny, handmade tools? There's even a metal plane!

Look at the miniature anvil, locked in a benchtop vise. The vise works and is hand made!

More tools under glass. I don't know what some of these are. Do you?

So, you take a large horseshoe, weld a solid mouth piece snaffle bit to it, install a mirror and voila, you have a nice wall hanger! Finish with a 50/50 mix of turpentine and lineseed oil.

How about a collection of handmade braces with wooden shanked bits to match?

Morning Bruce. Dang... I was gonna grab a couple for a christmas gift to you! Guess I'll just have to give them to someone else! :D:rolleyes:

I know, I know... why didn't I know about this place while you were here at my place?!? You and I drove past this place about 10 times while you were visiting and didn't even know it existed! Damn and just damn, huh?

Don't forget to check out the earlier threads I've made in this same forum. Tons of stuff to see and it's all for sale!

That's it for now folks.

I have more photos to post but need to get my work day started. Running late, as usual!

Hope you've enjoyed so far. I know I have.

Baron, hope I'm not over doing it on your forum.

Cheers to all!

Really great stuff. Thanks for taking the time to photograph it and then to share it with the rest of us.
