Jeff,
do you have any pics

what do you all think is the best anvil for the forge/shop
the Swedish one aint to bad

Mine! :D

Seriously even after years I never could get used to the anvils most farriers in the US use. Way too light and the shape is all wrong! Try and make a thumbprint heel on the end of the face. Because of narrow center of most US anvils the face is only supported in the middle. Making the face ánd the horn give when you hit it. Go make a shoe on a 300 Lbs anvil if you have a chance. Each and every hit from you hammer goes in. Nothing of the energy is lost. Now go try that with a typical US anvil......

I my opinion a good in between is this Future 3 type of anvil. With a very wide aluminum base. Solid no too much vibration because of the width of the base and not too heavy either.

p.s. my recently bought anvil and what I call a typical US anvil. Look at the difference of how the face is supported by the shape of the center. It may appear trivial but makes all the difference! Hey, I'm lazy I want to hit steel as little as possible! ;)

I got the Future 2 because I like the straight conical horn. I used a torch and an angle grinder to cut turning cams into the heel and ground the edges of the heel to a slight taper.

I use a Nima anvil and I wouldn't trade it for anything. They are a little pricey but well worth it. I don't know of any other horseshoers that use one though. You can see their anvils here http://www.anvils.nimbaforge.com/

I really like the Nimba design. If I did more draft shoeing, that would be my first choice in an anvil.

Mine too, even when I only shoe reiners. In fact I tried to buy one (the 260 Lbs) but shipping to Holland took a long time and since I ran into that beauty pictured above just recently I bought this one and saved me a lot of money.

p.s. I never worked a NIMBA anvil but I sure like the shape!

I have a Swedish anvil, Kohlswa 139 kilos. Really like it for my shop anvil.

Mikel,

Have you got around to drilling holes in the base yet? If so, I was wondering how that was working out for you?
