Tom,when it comes to critisizing i can't help myself.Have you ever in your natural life took over a barn of 25 horses or so,and walked into a graveytrain?
The best i have ever seen was horses with good conformation shod fairly well, and all the rest were butchered or close to it.that is the only reason i critique things. Why do you think different farriers are called? Because the old one moved away? Don't get hatefull............

As I see it, criticizing someone's work while posting anonymously is a particularly despicable act. It doesn't make any difference whether or not the criticism is justified, the salient point is that whoever did the work has taken personal responsibility for that work, while offering anonymous criticism is the antithesis of accepting personal responsibility and a notably cowardly act.

Tom,there is just one sailent point! Either they get it or they don't? It is hard to judge ones ability by their words on this board nomatter what their name is.Because when i first came here i thought the best in the world was here, but after their pics i had a change of mind.I am 6yrs younger than you,and i respect my elders, but sometimes it hard...................
Maybe someday i can come to Kathy texas ?

Ron,But could you do it if you had to?

No I don't do hot stuff. In fact it's a wonder I manage to keep shoeing horses at all. Luckily for me there are grinders around. When a shoe doesn't fit I decide to either grind off part of the foot or part of the shoe, whatever seems easier. Sometimes grinding off part of the horse is easiest did you know that?

p.s. some of my best work! (New grinder makes all the difference!)

Nossir! Unless one is willing to take personal responsibility for any criticism one might offer, one's credibility is nonexistent.

Changing your mind is a personal matter; criticizing folks' work while hiding behind a pseudonym is pure cowardice, no matter how valid the criticism.

I am 6yrs younger than you,and i respect my elders, but sometimes it hard...

I enjoy the respect of my peers; I have no anonymous peers and the respect of folks of that persuasion - or lack of same - is as meaningful to me as distant mouse flatulence.

Maybe someday i can come to Kathy texas ?

I live in Ledbetter, Texas. If you come on my place, stay in your truck and honk until somebody comes out of the house. We have Catahoulas and I'd hate to see you get dog bit. :)

Well, Thanks for the advice on hoof testers. Though I do not appreciate the ignorant bickering towards the end of the thread. I respect everyones opinions, and will begrudge no man for having his, but it is getting ridiculous.

Well, Thanks for the advice on hoof testers.

You're most welcome.

Though I do not appreciate the ignorant bickering towards the end of the thread.

You are the absolute arbiter of what you read. You can choose to quit reading anytime you find something you don't appreciate and you're certainly not required to read anything you find to be "ignorant."

I respect everyones opinions, and will begrudge no man for having his, but it is getting ridiculous.

Respecting everyone's opinion, whether anonymously rendered or responsibly rendered, is certainly your prerogative; personally, I do not share your enthusiasm for the anonymous criticism of posted works. That said: What did you decide to do about forging/fabricating a set of hoof testers?

RE:Hoof testers 25 Oct 2008 21:27 #25

I am going to go ahead and buy a decent pair, and if I have an empty day this winter I may try and make a set just for the heck of it. Really need to work on my forging skills, and I figure this would be a good way to pratice. Biggest problem is I tend to overwork the metal. When in shoeing school the instructer told me my biggest problem was I hit it to hard and distort the work. Thinking about trying to make some handmades just for the heck of it if I can find some decent bar stock around here. Need to get a creaser also. And maybe a hot pritchel, though I made one in shoeing school that worked ok, just didn't have good steel so the tip kept breaking. May try to make a new one.

Now Tom,that was good.Nobody has to read everything. And,its not what people say,its what they do? Right? You have to agree with that?We miss more by not looking then by not knowing? >

Now that is some ingenuity, I think for the time being I may get out the welder and try that.

Has anyone ever forged a set of hoof testers? I was wanting to attemt a pair, but wanted to see if anyone more experienced than I (which is probably most of you) had ever made a set, and if so is it worth the effort? Also if anyone has any ideas on how to do them.

very effective if you don`t what to make a one to one GE that no one can tell the difference bettween your tester and those from clove city is

look at the shape of the tester not set up nor down for the rivet .just copy two the same using flat not to wide steel ,flat
turn one over cross them so they are giving you the shape of a finished tester spot weld the together and drill a hole and rivet at the point they cross .cut the spot weld with the grinder ,

after that heat them up a bit and change the shape so they can be used

weld small nuts to the end and cut cross notches ,this will give you the teeth that GE have .

you can buy them here like that simple and quick

all the best
ray knightley.....just watched L.A crash ,as part of my studies of american life:D
