Last winter a customer wanted some taction for the shoes & i could only use drill tec, since i don't have an acetelene torch for borium.

But soon after the shoeing the drill tec came off & the lady was mad cause she paid well:-(

What is the trick to getting it to permanately stick to the shoes?? Someone said that i have to make a divet in the shoe so it puddles there. Is that right??
If it falls off again i may loose this customer!
So... please give me your tricks!!!!!:-)

Clean off the scale with a wire brush or the end of your hot rasp..use the end to s****e off the scale. Use Brazing flux. Pay attention to whether the brass flows or not..if it hasn't or not very well you can re flux and reheat until it flows. I will pour some flux right over top of the chunk of drill tech.

Probably the single biggest reason for lack of good braze is contamination...if in doubt always clean where you intend to braze.

Get a piece of heavy braizing rod and "tin" the spot to take the drill tec first.
Preep the area like Andy said then put a piece of the rod on and let it melt on to the shoe, then add the drill tec.
This is the kind of thing that takes practice and is done best with a torch and knoledge of welding.

Get the area of the shoe that you want to apply the drill tech to hot. Brush vigorously, apply a little flux, apply drill tech, alittle more flux on top, and back in the forge. Try to get all that done and still have some color in the shoe. Once the drill tech melts bring the shoe out of the forge and set it on the anvil (the anvil works as a heat sink and draws some of the heat out of the shoe so as to kinda set the bronze mediam) then a quick dip in the quench bucket and brush again. You will start to recognize wether or not you have good adhesion.

Although some drill tec comes fluxed, it's not enough, always use more. I do make a divot, but it's just to hold the chunk in place until it melts, it's not to form a puddle. I haven't had any come off that I know of.

You can also try grinding the shoe before you put in the forge. Not much, just enough to make it shine. In the white as some would say.
For about 300 bucks you can have a oxy/ace rig. Its a lot easier to apply this way to me than in the forge. You can weld with it too, which is handy a lot of times. I put the shoes in the forge to preheat, then apply the drill tech or borium with the torch. Borax is all I use for flux. Havent had any troubles with it.
Its as good as I can do it, every time I get to do it

Great advise and instruction guys. One thing I would add, even though it is evident to some, when using the forge, only try to apply the drill tec to one end of the shoe at a time.

I have found that if I work the toe of one shoe and the heels of another shoe, I can get the job done rather efficiently.

Also, I leave the door to my forge open so I can watch the chunks. As soon as the flux on the chunk starts to flow, I pull the shoe from the forge and use a brass hammer to both spread the drill tek around and to press down on it as the flux cools. Only takes a few seconds.

I know this is supposed to be about drill tec, which I use just like everyone else. But if you have a drill press in your rig, why not try some tungsten carbid pins. They are very effective and are extremely easy to put in.
