I was looking through a blurton tool list and I saw a set hammer. What is it for? I couldn't find any info.

I belive it's like a small flatter.

For getting into tight spots where an errant hammer blow would muck things up. You still need a GOOD striker.

I met Michael Wildenstein this summer when he did a quick clinic and talk at Saratoga Springs and he used his cross pein for forge welding as well. I haven't tried that yet but it makes sense.

I use a set hammer a lot, there are different shapes and kinds. They are a lot smaller so your not pushing thru the bulk of the material like a flatter. Good to make collars and such. I use mine a lot to get behind the edge of your source hole of a clip. A hind preventer roadster has a set down and this allows you to cut with a creaser and then use your set hammer to set the rest down without hammer marks.

Not bad to have one in your arsenal.

tricky shoe, at that site he used the anvil edge and table to do the set down but I get the point.

I went to a Dennis Manning clinic, a couple of months ago and he taught us how to make the tools to make them, then made a set hammer ,with an eye-drift, and drift. Great stuff!! and made them too, and learned the heat treating process, I would highly recommend getting to one of his clinics.
