TOPIC: Steel Heartbar Shoes vs. Plastic Heartbar Pads #2

Steel Heartbar Shoes vs. Plastic Heartbar Pads #2 20 Sep 2008 14:10 #1

I Hope To Have a Thread That Stays On Topic
vs. would indicate a single topic with a comparative aspect.

The first time that I had really considered Plastic Heart Bar pads
was during a clinic featuring Myron McLane as the guest speaker.
Since then, there are times when I have used his pads,
and others in order to give the horses what they need.

I use steel heartbar shoes mostly, which includes,
purchased Heartbar shoes, handmade,
as well as a welded insert applied to an open shoe.

The shoe below would be one of the welded inserts.
(Yes the frog support looks kinda funny,
but that was the Bi-level shape of the frog and
I achieved the much needed and advised
zero pressure applied to the frog)

After viewing Ricks photo of an application that he had done . . .
(Thanks Rick for letting me use your photo as a plastic application example)

. . . I got to thinking about the need for the
FULL CONTACT yet ZERO PREASURE application of a Heartbar shoe,
And wondered if the plastic version really delivers.

Being that the frog support plastic pad, is not absolutely ridged,
When a horse foot steps on a large stone
and it is central between the actual shoe,
and the only contact is with the frog support,
then would there not be an extreme amount of pressure on the frog?

Conversely, if the foot was to come to rest
where the ground was in contact with the shoes perimeter,
but there was a hollow in the ground
right where the frog support was
would the support then, not be doing its job?
(I can see that in Ricks photo,
the rear of the pad between the heels of the shoe
there is a pretty solid suport,
but not forward of that.)

I am not an advocate for any of the heartbar choices, necessarily,
And Impression material or other fillers aside . . .

. . . Some may think that, maybe I'm splitting hairs,
But as the thought occurred to me,
I figured it might be worth exploring
and asking all of you, for your respected opinions.

PS. As Rick suggested to me . . .
. . . "Lets include aluminum Heartbar shoes in this discussion."

maybe we could stay on topic if we knew what you wanted. I thought Tony was on topic in the other thread.

But to attempt to stay on topic. I use both heart bars and plastic heart bar pads. Depends on the horse, where he lives, what he does, and the problem as to which appliance I apply.

In my expereince I've had good success with steal heart bars, seated leather rim pads and rocker toes in laminitic cases. I've never used a plastic heart bar in this situation. I reserve the plastic wedge variety for negative angle feet or unloading sections to releive 1/4 cracks if the axis is broken. I've also used them in SFT contracture horses in three degree nannered eggbars and in open heeled shoes.
I have avoided the plastics in founder cases because I want total control over frog support and the plastic, in my mind, is more flexible and dynamic than a steel tongue with a leather barrier.

Is it really doing the job???

I have used a lot of plastic and steel heartbars. Most of the time I use Myron McClain pads or castle bar wedge with frog support.

It is my experience horses that do not like pressure on the frog do better with steel heartbars and leather rim pad vs plastic heartbar pad.

I think the plastic frog support pads work well, however you need to determine if the frog can handle pressure.

Have you had different results ,from Acute or Cronic cases ,with both? What would make the case of the Myron Mclane, Heart -Bar ,pad vs the flat steel Heart -Bar? What is the determining factor of using ,them ,other than a DVM telling you to Bolt them on?

The plastic frog pads apply an upward pressure when loaded then release it during the flight arc. A steel heartbar or a solid plate (spider plate, castle perfomance plate, EDSS multipurpose plate, sigafoos series II plate cut to your desired shape etc. ) if properly fit to sit slightly off of the frog provides less loading. Soft filler can be used to prevent mud from infiltrating while still not loading the frog.

You can use your hoof testers to test the frog to determine if the frog can be loaded. Or stand the horse on an object like the handle of an old hoof knife. If he settles into the frog support he is standing on and looks comfortable the flexible support is the better choice. If he does not like the loading the solid support is the better choice.
