I once again have had to work on a horse that was trimmed by a bare-footer that was lame. Too short, no foot mass.

I snuck some shoes on the horse, and it was touch and go.

Treated the feet with Dura-sole after shoeing and put the horse up. Came back in that afternoon and treated the feet every 15 minutes with Dura-sole and every third treatment I used Benzoin Tincture. I did this for a hour.

They worked the horse on a cow(it is a cutter) after the treatments and he was sound.:D

that Dura-sole is amazing stuff, bare-footers and al' naturals should keep some in the truck. Thier work usually makes me keep a supply of it.

The ingredients in durasole are basically iodine, and potasium iodide, caustic hardners. In horses trimmed too short , I also find that a quick proper hot seating then shoeing with a rim pad also helps.

That's a tad evil wouldn't you say? Anytime I've burned a short foot they hold there leg up and shake it around. I wouldn't suggest it.

The ingredients in durasole are basically iodine, and potasium iodide, caustic hardners.

Because of its use as an intermediary in the illegal synthesis of methamphetamine, the DEA made iodine compounds containing more than 2.2% titerable iodine controlled substances in September, 2007. Durasole made after that date contains no iodine or potassium iodide; Durasole made before that date contained 2% iodine, but it was included in the formula as a microbicide/marker, not as a "hardener." Iodine in 2% concentration is an efficient microbicide and a great marker - but it's neither appreciably caustic nor an effective hardener; in higher concentrations ("7%", "strong iodine", "livestock iodine") iodine is still not a particularly good hardener, but it makes a very good blister. :(

In horses trimmed too short , I also find that a quick proper hot seating then shoeing with a rim pad also helps.

In my experience, while the practice can sometimes be beneficial, the pressure of a rim pad, even one seated out with a grinder, can also worsen the presentation.

Personally it is the owner many times that needs a shot of hot seating to bring them off their tirade from a sore horse.
One minute your the blessed savior and in an instant your sh-t on a shingle.

The horse most times will grow hoof and harden up in a few days with selective care.
The owner is in most cases the worse of the two problems.

Tom, will dura sole work on them ??? the owner that is ;)
Every shoer or trimmer will at sometime in his/her career sore a horse.
Never intentional, but the sKy is falling and you caused it from the blessed owners...

Perhaps "seating" is the wrong term, a lite scorch might be more appropriate. Seen it done at show and done it at shows on horses with stinggy front ends and seen it work. Not saying it's right or the exact thing to do and again another thing you shouldn't do unless taught by someone but it does work.

Gee Eric, how hot and for how long do you burn it?
Tom I don't rim pad every one, and those I do I have not had that trouble, and yes I do seat the pad out, to the inner edge of the hoofwall , so only the wall is bearing the pad.

Well gee, I thought you experienced guys would know this already..

HOW: (TomT you are right "scorch" would be a better term but I have always called burning the foot "seating" just one of those things )
I do two, very light, *very fast* "scorches". One full second ONLY, then wait a minute and do another. Shoe is beyond cherry but not quite orange . Good and hot , not enough to set it on fire but hot enough so the heat will form a good shallow burn and does not have time to penetrate very deep. I want to just quicky burn a "crust" in the edge of the sole.

WHY: On a "trimmed too short foot", it hardens and flattens the inner edge of the sole down to the wall, without removing any more sole horn. Thereby insuring that a seated out shoe can be safely placed on it . It makes the edge of the sole more hard and therefore creates a more solid and protective support structure for the solar margin of the coffin bone.

I do not have horses show ill effects or go off sore from doing it this way. And of one should occasionally complain for a just second or two from the heat, they are just fine a couple seconds after. IMO two or three seconds of them acknwledging the heat is far better than having them sore for days, or abscessing from sole pressure.
So Eric, if you don't hot seat a "trimmed too short" horse to shoe it, how do YOU fix it?
