TOPIC: Pressure setting on forge?

Pressure setting on forge? 03 Sep 2008 00:14 #1

What is the proper pressure for a NC Whisper deluxe? Can 1 burner run hotter than the other it seems like my right burner throws out a hotter flame ?

10-15 lbs. My left side burns hotter on my whisper momma.

Mine does the same. I run mine around 11 lbs.

Mine too. Talked to NC tool today and it was suggested to adjust the depth of the igniter. Haven't had a chance yet.

I think it depends on how you work.

I used to pull the front shoes, and put new fronts in the forge and let them heat up while I trimmed the front feet, when I was done trimming the shoes were ready for shaping, shaped the fronts, hot fit, and did the same thing again for the hind feet. I used an old Valley forge two burner, but it didn't hold heat well, so it gave me plenty of time to work.

Now I use a Forgemaster and I don't have as much time until the shoes get hot, so I could just turn down the pressure some, or leave the door open I guess and waste alot of gas. Instead I just trim the feet and take a little break while the shoes heat up.

I would play with you pressure setting allowing you time for what you want to do in your routine.

I run my forgemaster at about 11-12 (its in the shoeing trailer) and my whisper baby at about 13 (its in the back of the shoeing van) can't comment on pressure for the NC doubles as I only have the little NC.

Hi, Im a blacksmith..Not a farrier but I am a horse lover and rider..So anyway :D
My gasser is a Diamondback Ironworks 2 burner blacksmith model..For normal forging 5-6 PSI is all thats needed..It will reach welding heat at about 12 or so PSI...

I run my set up a little different than others I guess,
I run my regulator full open, (never had a gauge)
and adjust what I need with the valve.
That way I can have a low setting for general shoe making,
and then if I need more heat I just crack it open with the same valve
for quick heats or for welding.

Seems to work.

Howdy,

I have the N.C. Whisper Momma. I too had the same issue with my far side burner running a smidge cooler than the other. I took off the jet and very very carefully reamed it out with the next size larger drill bit. I probably only took maybe a thousandth of an inch out, reattached, and it works wonderfully. I don't have a thermometer that registers that high, but it heats shoes up equally as fast.

I have my regulator set to around 13psi, and this area where I work is around 3500 ft above sea level if elevation matters to the settings.... but it gets darn good and hot.

Does elevation effect the pressure setting on a forge? It effects most everything else, such as carburetors on cars, etc.
