So i was just wonder. since i am new to the bussiness, and i am full with questions. i hope there is no limit to the amount you post lol.

So my question is if i purchased a grinder from delta,or craftman,or even a Ace hardware brand. Can i put a expander wheel on them? or do i need to put out all that money on top of the wheel and get a Baldor? I work at Ace hardware currently until i can build my client tell. and they have some Nice 8" grinders. and they are quite cheap but work great from the words i hear. Any info would be great

Brad- nothing personal but I'm starting to get a negative feeling about you. If you want to be a farrier, why are you working at ace hardware? If you just got out of school, why is your concern which grinder you should get? You need to make some calls and get an apprenticeship. It's summer you should be able to find work w/pay. If all you want is money, put in a bid a watchung.

Brad,
To answer your ??,the cheaper grinders do work with the expander wheels.
You may need a bushing for the shaft, your boss at the store can help there.A cheaper grinder will work just fine till you can afford better.Good luck with Your career!!

First grinder for a new Farrier is a hot rasp! Ya learn alot starting there.

the expander wheels will work on about any bench grinder motor but they may not have the power to really get the work done. A vice and a 4.5 angle grinder with a flap disk will get you by until you have the coin for a good one.

But a vice and a hot rasp will teach you something about what you can hammer into a shoe.;)

Some people are like Slinky’s, pretty much useless but make you smile when you push them down the stairs.

Good advice ,Jeff, I shelled - out 4, cheap, ones in a year , Until i ponied -up- for the Baldor,,, Have had it for 3 years, With a 10 in - expander, wheel, and a multi-tool , from stonewell, Works, great, and i have no complaints. Screw that hot-rasp, and -vice, That is Bar-baric, IMO, But Jeff,is right --Hammer -control, is King! I don't do it though! I have - NONE!!!

Mr russel, dont get me wrong. but who are you to judge me of my situation. i am in a apprenticship. and i am trying to buy my stuff slowly. and i am smart enough to no. clients dont show up on the door step over night. I work with a few farriers during the week. and i work at ace on the weekends. And until my work picks up and i get a steady paycheck doing this i intend to keep working there. it helps with my gas bill, and truck payment and my student loan from farrier school

Sorry there Brad, I don't know your situation. But if your setting up a trailer, buying grinders, or if you were even close to starting up a farrier business, I would've thought one of these 3 individuals you are apprenticing with would have at least thrown you a few trims to do Sat. morning so you wouldn't have to work at ace. Maybe the farriers in your area are different than the ones in my area.

I have a jet grinder and an ickler sander. I'd suggest baldor grinder and burr king sander.

I have the 10" wheel on a 3/4 hp grinder from a farm store (Orschlen's - sp). A couple of things to look for. first - you need the 5/8" shaft. The 1/2" to 5/8" adapters (plastic) allow too much slop. Next, you need to make sure the shaft (unthreaded part) is long enough. It need to fill the hub since the threaded part is slightly smaller and allows wobble. It does not have to be a Baldor, but it will work much better if the expander wheel fits on the grinder properly. I have several grinders in the shop that were almost good enough. Lets me have a number of wheel and grits ready in the shop at the same time (recycle the grinders).

thank you for all your kind words. atleast 99.9% were :p . i think my question was hit on the head quite hard. i appreciate all the replys. i guess ill buy one from my work and see how that works out then go from there. heres another question. a little off base. but my master that i am under pushes hot shoeing, and certification with the BWFA. what is the ratio of farrier on her that hot shoe, and cold shoe. and how many of you are certified? is a certification worth it? My master thinks that it might be almost a requirment one day to do so. let me know. thanks

I'd make sure any grinder you get has about 8 amps and 1 hp.

I'd shoot for the AFA Certified, practicing for the certified will raise your basic skill level up more than any other test imo.
