I was wondering if anyone has tried kerckhaert sliding plates and what your general impression of them was.

I really like 'em. I have mostly switched over to them from Double S. I like th nail hole pattern and where the first nail is set. The horses I have using them do good with 'em.

If you shoe high end reiners you need Anvil Brand, quenched and all.

Back yard reiners can do with Double S and similar. They are time savers because the shape and nail fit is a whole lot better than Anvil Brands.

Why do you need the anvil brand for the high end reiners?

Have any of you tried the TK sliders yet ? You might find that you like them.

I like the Tk sliders and the Anvil brands myself. Have used the others, but these are my preferences.

I have. I used my horse as a test ****y for them. I put the multipurpose ones on him. They fit up really nice. I thought they would have more of a roll to them though. I just used them once, I have no reason for him to be sliding for me, we don't show and probably never will.

if you shape the kerckhaerts throw them in the forge and quench them wouldnt it give the same effect while still offering better nail hole placement?

Let's not go into why that is but on a hard stopper you'll find the branches just bend up in less than 2 weeks, which gets them sore after 4. Don't use them and I've shod a reiner or two, maybe three......

Have you tried any of the bladesmith's "superquench" formulas on mild steel sliding plates? It might be worth doing if there's a big difference in price/availability of the various brands of sliders.

Glad you mention that Tom. Thing is lately I'm getting away from overquenching sliders. I found they not only got to be hard but often a tad too slick too. And sliding is not the only thing a reiner has to be able to do....

Anvil Brand works nicely here too. Heat them up to black/dark cherry not more when you quench them. At least that's what I do. Maybe that's why they don't win anymore

Ron are you shoeing for Tim McQuay?

I got to agree with Ron on the Double S. That's the reason I gotten away from them as much as possible. Can't get Anvil Brand here. The thing I like about the Kerkhaerts I've tried is the 3 holes instead of 4 per branch. No need for 4. Placement of the nails are better. Still have to rework the holes for the nails I use, but the shoe is hot to shape anyway.
