It only takes a half minute or so longer per shoe (if that) to run it back out a couple times. I usually run it back once about twice) and ONE broken tap stuck in a hole will cost a *lot more* in time getting the thing out and setting another into your drill chuck than that extra 30 seconds of backing the filings out. I'm a believer in preventing the broken tap in the first place.

Yeah! I couldn't be bothered with running it in a little, back out, and so on and so on. I guess if most of my shoeing was done cold, I'd have to get used to it!
Are you saying you tap your shoe hot? I cant imagine that your bits hold up to well.
