TOPIC: Nail Fit

Nail Fit 03 Jun 2008 02:13 #1

I am wondering what everyone here considers a good nail fit. If I were willing to make all my shoes it would not be a problem, as the punches I have and nails I normally use for handmades (mx 50) are a good fit, but when it comes to the keg shoes I use I have not been able to find a nail that I really like, is it just me or do you'all find it hard to find a nail, shoe, combo that works well. Also just how much does the nail fit contribute to keeping shoes on.

IMO. a loose nail = a loose shoe, soon

Some shoe manufacturers, have a shoe nail chart.

I like the MX series as well, for hand mades.

yea, that I believe is true. I have been using the vettor 5 slim with the st. croix lite plain, and have been having too many lost shoes the last couple of months, was using the capewell 5 slims and maybe need to go back.

Well often the problem is the design of the crease in the keg shoe. Many are just are not creased to fit ANY nail very well.
I think the crease in most StCroix shoes except the eventers are terrible. Same for the crease in most Diamond, MFC, and similar design shoes with that all-too-shallow, "U"shaped crease. A nauil head is "V" shaped, not "U". I can't understand why the manufacturers missed it in so many shoes.
Best creases I have found in keg shoes are in St.Croix eventers, (which fit either an MX, smaller type E-head or even a city head all fairly well) , the Kerhkhart SSP and SX series, and Natural Balance, and the nails for those depends on which shoe design you are using.
The NB Centre fits are designed strictly or E-heads and the regular NB will take either a city or a smaller E fairly well.

Hadnt given it much thought but the nails that I have used all fit well on a medial/lateral plane but the dorsal/palmer is terrible, lots of play, forward and back. I guess the crease is not really a crease, but a groove.:(

My idea of a good nail fit is when your able to slide the nail in with ease
till you get to the top and she sits up a tad just to tap lightly

and she is rock solid no movement no daylight at the back
the right amount of pitch from toe to heel

i think you will only achieve this in a hand made
and your stamp and pritchel are corect for that nail

machine nail holes are a bad 2nd when it becomes to fit
yes i would say good nail fit is everything

thats why most competitions are won and lost on nail holes

IMO

I agree Smitty, but do you hand make all your shoes? what about the werkmans, or ssp kerckhaert are they better? I find that for the most part the shoes that I use (st.croix) a city head nails fits pretty good, but lots of the horses I shoe need a slim blade, thin shelly walls ect. And it looks like most of the keg shoes are punched for the regular blade nail. Maybe just have to start hand making mine.

I use a lot of werkman shoes, their nail fit isn't much better. Like Smitty, for a good fit, use homemades. But I don't home make all my shoes.

The nail- holes pinched?? You are probably not using the right nail , or you are bashing them shut. One other possibility is that they are so worn that they do not have the same depth of stock to accept the nail head.

i only make the odd few pair a week just to keep intouch
with it showing the app and that
