It does help. I've got a client that adopted a BLM horse. No one else would get near it to trim. It took over an hour to get the job done. She would lounge the mare until the horse would decide to stand rather than run. I had 4 other trims lined up. Each time I'd get any resistance I'd just step out and work on one of the other horses. At the end the BLM mare was very agreeable to have the option to put up with me rather than lounge any more.
I just remembered that when I read your post. Thanks
I try to take one day at a time -- but sometimes several days attack me at once.

I've set up the rig at the gate of a round pen for horses that wouldn't let me hold a foot, and with a few dosen laps were begging me to set them on fire and hammer their feet.

Dear dear Bill,
Pain In The A, off course :)
Anyway, I don't charge an unruly horse fee. If the horse is dangerous, I won't carry on without PROPER sedation. If it is just a pain, I put on my brainlessly patient face and carry on. No rush DOES pay, although many times you should not muck around the first few times and then they trust you and will not mind being worked on longer. I also distinguish between horses that are afraid, the untrained arrogantly ignorant ones, the spoiled ones, geldings, stallions and mares-namely every group needs different approach. A horse that does not improve has pain somewhere, that has to be dealt with by other professionals. I do slap a horse who only has a pecking order problem, immediately and unconditionally. If I feel I get ANGRY, I stop, take a few deep breaths before I carry on. Can't afford to be angry and loose control. I am a firm believer of having a Relationship with the horse, whatever it takes to win their trust and respect. I am constantly paying attention to the little signals the horse gives with his body, sometimes holding up a hind foot 5 inches lower saves very tiring wrestling sessions...or not pulling the foot too much sideways settles the horse. I don't think I was a particularly able horse whisperer, but generally after 2-3 shoeings we end up with a stressfree situation, nobody gets upset, owners like it how kind I am to their horses and I am shoeing horses without annoyance who used to be bad for other good, but less patient farriers.
All this would be not natural for me if I have not started off riding young horses before I become a I am still convinced that the "I thought I give it a go at horseshoeing" approach is no easy way to horseshoeing heaven...
Huh, maybe I got carried away

Alot of it is where your at really, if your new and building a business your more then likely to just do it work(even thou you should charge or leave since a rep for doing bad horses is worse then one for charging for them).I usually try to educate the owners and the horse if its possible(young or mistreated horse),lucky most my work is in training/showing barns and a groom will hold if need or a cocktail( demosadain is sweet)works. But having a GP jumper that where #5ssp that would let you bring his feet forward and drugs didnt help(stretching and the chiro did but it was easier do finish upside down),sometimes you just find a different way to skin a cat.

I remember a horse my dad did years ago named Dark Harbor had stringhalt so bad if you picked his hinds more then 2 inches off the grond he kicked ya, no would shoe him, so the owners payed for a pair of creave nail pullers to be reworked and some extra time in shoeing(you had to set his hind on a 2x4 to make him think it was on the ground and shoe him like that) was easy that way.

Sometimes you get a bad(hard) one thats in a barn full you do, figure out how to do it drugs ,chain whatever but more training is always best and as said before you must take care of yourself. So arent trainable they are PIGS you decide what its worth cause even a 50 horse account for 1 bad one isnt worth it if you in a wheelchair. Ihope this helps you decide how you will handle it myself i make sure the owners know my charge is more then a shot of demosadain. :D Scott

ok, we all need to watch our backs, an unrully fee is great, charge them lots, suggest a trainer, get a vet to get them doped up. but what happens to the farrier when a perfectly good horse gets spooked by something, be it a known problem, by all the people at the barn and the farrier gets hurt real bad. yes we all work on bad horses esp. when we start out and are hungry, but learn that getting hurt isn't worth it. There are too many nice horses out there. It was a nice horse that blew up on Friday last and crushed my arm.i have been doing him for 10+ years. he was spooked by a bycycle. be carefull out there and watch your back !

Sorry to hear that you were badly hurt(actually, I'm sorry to hear that you were hurt at all).

I that that injuries, minor or severe are just inherently a part of our job. When the farrier gets injured, s/he had better have a back up plan because unless the farrier can prove negligence, s/he is going to be on their own.

On my price list I have a "Behaviorally Challenged" horse fee of $30 per 15min incriment. The most I have charged was $90 above my normal shoeing fee. The owner did not complain, but she did sell the horse!
