TOPIC: The Business of Starting Out

The Business of Starting Out 08 Feb 2007 22:22 #1

Hi all--

For those who have been through it, could you fill me in on the business of starting out? I've worked for farriers in the past, but have just taken the plunge and bought a used truck and body to work out of. Now I need to know what I need to do in terms of insurance and taxes, etc. to get going on your own. I'm trying to figure out what I'll call the business. Any and all help would be great :)
I know the farrier I worked for used Markel for insurance, are they the best around for farrier related insurance? Thanks!

Annie,
I believe Markel to be the only one to my knowledge. Unfortunately I have heard some not so good things about them but as far as anybody knows they seem to be the only game in town.

I would like very much to find some other companies besides them. If anybody out there knows of any other such companies dont be bashful. More than a few of us would like to know.

Good luck to you for a successful business
George

Anyone just have catastrophic insurance? I am not at the point where I am worried about routine Dr.s visits, but I am worried about getting kicked or stomped and trying to pay for the hospital bill! Does Markel insurance cover that?

Amy,
Markel is just business liability, care custody control, etc.

Medical the Union has. I'm not sure what you mean by catostrophic. By that do you mean some kind of temporary disability policy? I think most states have that dont they?

There are a few more such deals that the Union is presently working on so more benefits will be forthcoming.

Insurance that basically covers only medical emergencies like breaking an arm/leg, getting kicked in the head, cancer.....stuff like that. I don't need insurance for routine Dr.s appointments, just the big stuff!

I think a basic medical insurance policy covers emergencies like that standard. Office visits and so forth usually comes with it. I think is usually a package deal. Maybe somebody who knows more about that stuff can chime in here.

Ditto to what Gary said. My wife's insurance has paid for every emergency room visit, doctor visit, and surgery that I have had. I think what you are looking for is a long term disability policy that will help cover the cost of living on top of medical charges. Very hard to get as a farrier but not impossible. My wife just got that on me this year but not for herself because of medical reasons. Don't know if I should be worried yet, but as far as I can tell my food doesn't taste any different. :D

I am not being a salesman or anything, but I just got set up with N.A.S.E.
who underwrites for Mega Health and Life insurance co. I am 40 and the cost is based on age of the oldest in family... We get health, and vision no deductable except for major illness (deduct on that is 1000.00 to 3000.00 depending on the illness. Cancer, Kidney disease, etc.) A dental program that gets us about 60% discount on all dental procedures. The best part is wage protection, the one we chose was for around 1500.00 per month. our preimium is 475.00 per month (wife daughter and myself) I had been with this company before when I was in the construction business and liked it so I went back. (I got away from it when I went to work for another co. who covered my health ins.)

You guys that have wives taking care of this, what happens when they get laid off, downsized, outsourced, or any other word you care to apply to it?

Would be pretty intelligent to have something else to fall back on don't you think?

Besides that, in regards to Markel Rhulen. Does anybody know why they look favorably upon the AFA and the BWFA but do not recognize the Union or the Guild at all?

One could see how they might jump into bed with the AFA but why the BWFA for crying out loud?
