Here is a link to some postings that were on the AFA's bulletin board about the membership benifits committee.

We are seeking members to volunteer a LITTLE of their time to make the AFA a better place for all members.

We are looking specifically for members who have some background in web-site development. We are also looking for people who have a background in market research. Any other volunteers are also welcomed.

We will try to give specific recognition for members efforts. Please contact me (Jim Zieger) directly via email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or Nancy Zwicker CJF (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

Thanks in advance :),

There is a ton more information available on the AFA web-site about this opportunity, including some specifics.

If some people would pitch in and volunteer we could make a whole lot of change for the better, very quickly.

We (We=AFA membership benefits committee) have some terrific ideas that we'd like to see implemented if you (You=you AFA membership and potential members) like those ideas, and we also want a lot more ideas from you.

As long as they are constructive, we will take questions or ideas from ANYbody that has a stake in farriery. If you're getting under a horse, and you think that there's something you'd like from your association, tell us about it. :) If you own or ride or train, or know a horse and you have an idea that the AFA can use to help make farriers lives better, PLEASE submit it.

If we can find a way to incorporate your ideas into a real and viable plan that is in the best interest of the membership, you may be able to get whatever benefit you ask for. You can customize your own association (or your future association if you're not a member ;) ) to meet your specific needs (as long as your idea works for the membership at large).

As a guide to forming your ideas, use some of these thoughts please:

-All potential membership benefits should be, at worst, fiscally neutral (they should not cost the membership anything more than they would gain the membership in tangible widely requested benefits (ie. discounted liability insurance)

-all ideas will need carefully researched and planned before making a formal organized proposal for implemention to the BoD and perhaps membership at large.

-the suggested benefits should be something that will be widely accepted and enjoyed by our diverse membership

-IF YOU'RE IDEA has sufficient merit and practicality to be implemented, you will be rewarded  . We are still working out the specifics on what the reward will be, but it is likely to look something like a substantial discount to the convention (or perhaps a free pass for a really good idea).

PLEASE, be creative, be constructive, be open minded, be inclusive of others and PLEASE be civil. :D

You may email ideas directly to me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or to Nancy Zwicker CJF This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Thanks,

Jim Zieger Farrier

If it's easier, to get some conversation started, you may also post ideas to this thread, or the thread at the AFA web-site.

PEOPLE, please step up. We are trying to bring real and significant benefits to you. We are trying to make your new membership dues worth the money you are paying for them and more.

Just start by making a suggestion.

Jim,
I'm not an AFA member at the current time. So i have no ideas of the current benefits other than 'nil'. Hence the reason I have not joined. Could you start with a list of current benefits?

That's a good idea Jim, maybe you could list the current benefits and then tell us about the one's your committee already has on the table to look at and where you are with them. That will give us an idea of where things are and what type of things we could maybe suggest for the future. Thanks.

I do not have the list in front of me, but I'd like to give you some idea soon, so I will try to do this from memory, Hopefully Nancy will notice this post and fill in my blanks :) .

Here are some of the existing benefits:
Subscription to the award winning (albeit recently controversial) Professional Farrier magazine,
An annual membership directory including details on all members (that wish to be listed) and a thorough listing of many vendors.
Substantial discount on AFA convention registration (one of the worlds premier educational and networking opportunities for farriers)
Discounts on Dodge trucks (below factory involce I believe)
    Discounts on John Deere equipment
    Discounts on many hotel chains
Many continuing education and clinic opportunities
Possibility of a several certifications that are sufficiently difficult to achieve that they hold value and prestige

One idea that we are looking into is a discount on supplies, tools and equipment (possibly including truck bodies or caps as an example).

Other ideas are discounted (or possibly even included in membership dues) liability insurance for certified farriers.

Now comes your turn to suggest ideas.

Good read but a little expensive at $150 a year.

Interesting but by no means can it beconsidered a benifit.
jvzieger wrote:

As a member I better get a discount. Benifit I think not.
jvzieger wrote:

Ok if you want to buy a new Dodge. However to consider this a benifit is a strech.
jvzieger wrote:

Also a strech.
jvzieger wrote:

No different discount than you can get by just asking. These same chains give the same discount to military, AAA, and many other organizations.
jvzieger wrote:

A benifit come on. The AFA has no continuing education and clinic are funded entirely my the fees charged by the local farriers association. who just got thier fees rased in order to be an AFA chapter. Nope not buying this as a benifit.
jvzieger wrote:

Not a benifit ether.
And in most cases have no value due to the AFA's lack of marketing to horse owners. The prestige is only the self satifaction you get for acheiving a goal, as well as amungest other AFA members.
jvzieger wrote:

Now if you could get this to be a 15 to 20% discount on hand tools, supplies and equipment that we use daily it would be a big benifit.
jvzieger wrote:

Why only certified farriers. Everyone could use this type of insurance certified or not. A group discount through a reputable insurance company would be great.

suggestions:

A Good group health insurance plan is a must and would be the best benifit. I know it was recently tried and failed due to some requirements placed by the insurance company. But this needs to be top priority in the benifits requirements.

I can understand a better insurance rate for farriers who are certified - would give more reason to get certified. Maybe also offer a different rate for those who are not certified.

Discounts on tools or equipment would be a real benifit.

Offer a discount on fuel (gas or diesel)

What about cheaper service on your rig - from some chain like Jiff Lube (maybe not them, I don't know what is all in the States now, but some national chain)

Discounts on books - Butler's PIII, Simon Curtis' Corrective Farrier I & II, and many others out there.

These are just some right of the top of my head that might be called "real benifits" useful to the everyday farrier.

Might also thorugh some discounts on all of the video's that would be helpful to farriers.

Maybe also try to get one for a good brand of Palm's so members have some easy way to keep track of clients and such.

If you want the Certification to mean something to the public, you need to do much more push for the public to understand what it means, and that it is difficult to attain.

As for the TV show's, I have never seen any of them as I don't have cable, and even if I did, I don't believe that the station is available here.

A discount on AFJ and other such farrier magazines would be nice too.

From what has been listed so far the ones I would want most are, Health Insurance and tool discounts.

Just some of my quick thoughts on it.

What about breakfast in bed and cold ales in the afternoon?
Ill bet if they did provide the above benifits, people would complain that the eggs were runny.

Well thats just the way life is. I am not asking for all of the above things, he wanted some suggestions, so I through some out there. Yes, a lot of them are just things that might be nice, while some are what I would consider a Major benifit.

P.S. You think they could do the breakfast thing too? :D

Chad (and all others),

Thanks for putting up ideas. Please keep them coming.

It doesn't matter what the idea is. Just try to keep this on the positive side. Breakfast in bed is a good idea :) (although not likely to happen as a member benefit, you may want to check with your significant other).

There will invariably be some good ideas and some bad ideas, and some real ideas with some not so real ideas. We'll do the sorting, you just keep the ideas coming.

Oh, on the volunteer note, if anyone wants to help with the sorting or research of a particular idea, there's another area where volunteer help would be welcomed.

This is an all volunteer committee. We don't get paid for anything except through the benefits that we bring to everyone, so if you want to "get paid" with a great benefit that you thought of, please consider helping to make it a reality.

Thanks, Jim :p

RE: Ideas, none original, to improve the AFA

The best thing the AFA could do for farriers would be to provide some form of reasonably priced health and hospitalization insurance. I realize "reasonable" means different things to different folks, but even $1,000 deductible, 80% coverage would look great in the event of catastrophic accident/illness. The cost should be part of the dues to insure that every member is covered because every member does not have a significant other with a good job and great benefits.

I think the AFA should return to the original concept of certification, which was to benefit the public by offering every farrier the opportunity to voluntarily demonstrate his ability to shoe to a standard. Restricting the tests to AFA members implies the only "good" farriers are AFA members, a patently silly notion that smacks of disingenuousness. After making the tests open to the world, I believe the AFA should mount a massive, slick rag advertising campaign in order to make the public aware of the certification program, with emphasis placed on the CF classification and the advantages of the horse owning public's knowing every CF has demonstrated the ability to trim/shoe to a rigid standard. The Western Horseman and Equus would be a good place to start.

I also believe the AFA should make a concerted effort to combat the BUA propaganda that pervades the Internet. It boggles the mind to think there are owners who believe that shoes "numb" the lower leg, but such idiocy is taken as gospel by the uneducated. The AFA's website is underutilized, but it needn't be: it would make a great educational venue if its URL were included in certification advertising.

The AFA's present emphasis on contesting serves neither the membership nor the industry well. The public doesn't care whether or not a farrier can forge a great roadster shoe, its primary concern is whether or not a farrier can shoe a horse.

Since proactive trumps both inactive and reactive, it wouldn't hurt for the AFA to formulate a model program for licensing and put it on the shelf so that if/when some state legislature or the feds decide to keep track of farrier earnings by taxing their services, it'd be ready to plug in. By doing so, we might get a fair shake, instead of having licensing crammed down our collective throats. Formulation of a plan does not imply implementation, it implies prophylaxis.

Finally, one man, one vote and a downsized BOD comprised of members at large, instead of gerrymandered districts would make for more equal member representation and a less c├║mbersome legislative process. If implemented in conjunction with electronic EC meetings, the AFA might be able to tend to its business on a timely basis without airing its dirty laundry for all to see.

You asked, I answered. :)

Very well put per usual, Tom.
I think a side effect of this policy being implemented would be an increse in membership.
