I am sure that printing on the back of the card would raise the price considerably. I hadn't thought of a rubber stamp....

As you suggest, some printers will run the price way up on this, bit it shouldn't be a pricey add on. We do our back printing for $15 / thousand, as long as it's something like you're talking about here--a centered tag line in b&w.

So it doesn't have to be terribly expensive; nevertheless, I don't generally recommend it as a great marketing practice. If it gets displayed at all, it will generally be posted on a reminder board with the "next appt." information showing, which doesn't advertise or market you at all.

We find that most farriers don't go through a lot of business cards, and we do a lot of small runs on them. If you opt to have the card do double duty in this manner, you'll likely be spending a lot more money on cards than you otherwise would. And the double duty purposes don't match; one's for marketing while the other's for utility.

If you're looking for a print item that will do double duty, we usually recommend that you put next appointment information on carbonless invoices, which gives both you and the customer a record / reference--and one that most people are likely to hang onto. And you're matching the double duty purposes since they're both utility / reference items.

As for the rubber stamps, we sell those as well, and I suppose they're great if you're filing stuff, but they don't project a real professional image in your marketing program... kinda like magnetic signs on truck doors.

I make my own cards using print shop deluxe. I print them on business card stock. When I run out I just print some more. If I decide that something needs done diffrent then I just make the change and print somemore.

I have some with the next appointment message on the back that I give to my customers as a appointment reminder.

I also print some with nothing on the back that I hand out leave on bulletin boards for potental customers.

Howdy You all
It has been so long since I have been here, that I needed to re-sign up.
Any ways, glad to be back. I have been reading through the forum a bit
to get a feel for how it has been, and I couldn't resist posting here.

About B.cards, I have made my own and handed out 1000's, and got some business from them.
Trouble is you need to see the person, in person to get a card to them.

I have been a full time Farrier since '01, and have tried many things.
A friend of mine, also a Farrier, spent 3 yrs trying to convince me to
move to Robson B.C., from the Vancouver area. So when My Wife agreed, we moved.
It was like starting over. My buddy and I rode together for the first 3-4 months,
and during that time I thought it best to do every thing I could to promote myself.
Cards were handed out, but to mostly my buddies clients?
Well that’s not going to get me a lot of work. So I worked on a strategy.
First was to build a website that could hold more info about me and my business,
thoughts on shoeing, types of horses, and anything else I could jam in there
so folks could get to know who I am.
Including my rates and areas covered etc.
Then I picked the most popular Classified ads paper and
put in a reoccurring ad with my web address looks like this:
1stChoiceHorseShoeing.com Shoeing and Trimming Horses 304-8400.
I also hung a glossy 8x11 poster, with pull off Ph.# tabs everywhere.
I even put an ad on the local TV Guide channel.(only a couple of weeks)
I even walked into the local newspaper and as I was taking out an ad to sell my camper,
asked the girl about how they handled press releases, only to have the Editor jump up and asked
"Hey are you the new guy in town pulling that fancy Trailer." And after I said yes he said
"Well if you've got a moment, I'll just interview you right now.
The write up and 1/3 page photo took up the entire front page of the newspaper.
(you can see it on my web site).

But the best over all, the best thing that I have done is to have the website,
and have a couple of lines in the Classified

This has been my busiest year ever, and I get a lot of business from my website,
from folks that I would never have been able to get a business card to.
That includes driving over any of the three mountain passes, even driving 1 & 1/2hrs. away.
(They are a range three rate-More Money)

Oh yea as a side note: I work on minis to draft. Here are only two examples:
1. One client has 30+ mini donkeys, (that she says no one in the area knows
how to trim, and she loves my work) thats a G note day.
2. A Belgian Draft Horse that I hand build shoes for plus Chalks = $485.
And yes a stock would be nice, but we get the job done well enough.

Well I quess I have rambled on enough, but my hope is that,
Being that this catagory is business improvment,
I may have said something to help someone.

I know this thread's been dead for a while, but I just had to comment on this.

Holy Cr@p, $485 for hand made draft shoes with calks. I'm guessing they're made out of gold?

I thought my draft prices were expensive. Well, to be fair, I prefer not to even do drafts anymore, 'cause I don't feel like I can charge enough, but WOW, $485...

Taint nothin Holy about excrement

Keep in mind that $485.00 is for a range three client.

The same horse next door would only cost $415.00

Also note; These are hand made shoes,
and each shoe is made with two heel, and a toe chalk,
and
These guys only call once a year, when they need
a new set of shoes, because they can't make their own. So,
my equipment and skill will not come cheep.
Any one who wants to hire me for year round work,
gets the deal in resets.

The problem with only charging $485 for shoeing drafts with hand made shoes is that eventually you'll wind up doing a lot of drafts when the big show hitch folks find out how cheap you are. :)

Drafts are a specialty on there own. We have farriers up here that only do Drafts.
Yep, different trim to your average "light" horse.
Phil Armitage wrote:
Your right they also need hoof care, problem is some people owne them and have no clue how difficult this is on the farrier and not willing to pay. The professional Draft shoers up my way use stocks. There is a father and son with mobile stocks. I refer all the Drafts to Draft horse shoers barfoot or not. I like my back and toes. Even a good Draft that stands well can't stand too long on three legs.
There are a number of tricks for working with the heavier horses. I don't use stocks or stands, I prefer to have the freedom to move as I'm working on them. The problem of them only standing on 3 legs is not with the horse as such, they are lazy and smart, they do the sums, you have 2 legs, so they only need to use 2 legs to get to four, hence, they lean on the farrier. Finding ways to ruin their little "games" without upsetting them is where I generally have little problems with them. I've yet to meet a draft who was just an a-s-s hole, but I'm sure that will come, in the fullness of time.
