O.K. I sold the horses and I am free to attend school.A couple of questions.Which schools would you attend ? Like a "top 5 preferred school list" which would you stay away from??? Also how about the year long program at University of Colorado at Fort collins?? My father is covering me for the tuition but how do you survive while you are in school??Food, car payment...etc......Is there time for a job or are you totally cooked at the end of the day??? Would I be better off getting financial aid and having my father help with expenses?? I'm not a kid anymore at 38 and trying to get all this together and still be able to eat/pay bills.

Karen; Going to school full time and survive all the other bills is a big challenge for anyone, but if you have help and can afford to do a long course you will come out much further ahead. Also if you have the opportunity to ride or apprentice with someone after you finish you schooling I strongly suggest you take advanage of that.
The schools are going to teach you the basics and depending on the course you opt to take you may be at a level to pass a certification exam.
Riding with someone will teach you what the schools can only touch on.
Customers and how to react to them and their needs, Different horses with different behaviors and different hoof requirements and the decision to do choose what to do for the particular foot and horse.
You will get a chance to see why two horses with the same or similar problems may be shod different due to riding/terrain/stable conditions etc.

There are a multitude of great farriers in the big state of Massachusetts with a wealth of skill/talent/ and experience. I also know there are a ton of farriers down there who are more than willing to help a new farrier in any way they can.

With that said here are the schools I suggest;

Cornell University if you can get accepted. Mike Widerstein is in a league of his own. (you can find their requirements on this site under schools)

Chris Gegory's school in Missouri, taught by Chris and his wife. They offer a course to suit almost anyones need. They also provide suitable housing.
You can choose a regular 8 week course or (if he hasn't changed it) you can choose a 2 yr course (Which would be similar to apprenticing with someone by the time you finish)
Chris Gegory is one of the leading clinicians traveling the country.
He is fun to watch and easy to talk to and he never gets irritated when asked to explain something he has demonstrated.
If you have the desire to learn, he has the desire to teach.

I have heard great things about the course at Colorado.

There are a lot of very good schools out there to choose from.
Choose a school that will fill the needs for the type of shoeing you will do.
Decide if you want to shoe backyard horses or hunters or 3 day eventers or whatever and find a school who will give you direction in that form of shoeing.

One time a farrier said to me shoeing a draft is just like shoeing a riding horse.
I have thought about that for a number of years and I would conceed that the basics are the same, but the finer points differ a lot.
Knowing how to handle a draft and knowing how to shoe for the many different uses all differ from what the regular horse shoer does.
As does shoeing for dressage or reining horses or 3/5 gaited saddlebreds, or any other dicipline.
So choose a school that will focus on what form of shoeing you want to do.

Good luck

Hey there Karen,
I just got back from Heartland Horseshoeing School (Chris Gregory's school). Chris provides a bunk house for you to live, and it's pretty decent. This is a very hard school so if you not ready to work, I probably wouldn't go there. If you choose to go there you will get under as many horses as you wishOn the other hand if your willing to work it is one of the most comprehensive programs in the country. As far as you bill situation I don't really have the answer for that.. Good Luck :)

Thank You,
Ryan

Ryan,
Are you ready to work? Make it 8:30 at the McD's at 44 & 90 tomorrow. See you then!
He is right... go to Heartland and bury yourself in it! JMO

Karen,

I agree, Chris Gregory's school in Missouri gives the best education for the buck. As long as you are willing to work for it. Take the Journeyman course. Very intensive, but worth every penny. He provides a a room and all you have to provide is energy, will, tenacity and food, and at 38 I am sure you are resourceful enough to live off of boxed macaroni and cheese for a few months. BTW the girls get the "Penthouse suite" upstairs, which comes with all kithchen implements, I know I stayed there for his Certification course : )

I would also talk to Ken Lyons in San Diego. You can find him through the AFA directory. He has an excellent ciriculum and is a good teacher (and Farrier)
