TOPIC: Starting out

Starting out 30 Mar 2006 04:24 #1

Hi I am just starting out and am trying to get my name out there more. I was wondering if anyone could tell me ways I might get new clients, and how to go about making my name known. Thank you

Michael

When I first started I ran an ad in the local and surrounding area newspapers and I got business from that for almost a year. Then I got to the point I wasn't getting any phone calls from it so I just droped the ads. I also went from barn to barn, feed store, any place I could stick a card. The important thing is to be nice and friendly and people will find favor in you.
One of the best things to do is make friends with all of the local farriers in the area. Most of them have more work than they want and business they dont like and will pass it on to you. Tell them you'd appreciate any business they send your way. In the meantime of building your business, apprentice with someone. I did this for 3 years.
Hang in there, don't get discouraged if you have to work a part time job somewhere for a couple of years. Also expect that your not going to get the nice horses with nice barns. Your going to get everything nobody else dosn't want to do and the people that only want their horses done once a year.
Hope this helps.

This is a very broad subject and difficult to give a short answer. I would think that a little background info would help. Who are you, where are you located, do you wish to stay in that area, do you want to travel, what skills do you have, education, experience, and the list goes on.

If you are just starting out, try to take on clients within your skill level and they will be the best way to get your name out. Also make time to get a mentor that is running a sucessful business and has great skills. Referals from a mentor Farrier and your own clients are good business. Vet referals are also good but that usually requires that one has great skills.

Hope this helped.

I am currently in oklahoma right now I travel up to 2 hours for some of the horses I currently are trimming. I went to a school here in Ok. for a 15 week course. I also rode with someone for 2 years prior to goin to the school because I wanted to learn more about puttin shoes on a horse than just doing shiv work as the guy called it. I can make basic fronts, hinds, sliders and have shod racehorses for a track in WV. I would like to stay in Ok but with so many farriers already in the area esp since I live 45 mins from the school I went to clients are hard to find. Hope that helps alittle on the background area at least.

Join the AFA, attend clinics, get to know other farriers and ride with as many seasoned farriers as you can. If your any good and can be trusted you will not have to advertise. Your work will speak for itself.

You will never know it all, the learning and improveing never ends.

Phil and everyone else here is right on. Get out there collaborate with other farriers give up a day a week and ride around with other farriers. Commit lot's of time in front of the anvil building shoes. Get your throwing arm in shape, you'll need it when you are building shoes. It really helps to get rid of them when they look as though they have been to hell and back. :D
Join the OFA and AFA, get invovled with clinics and scribe contets if you can. Sponge up any info and never ever quit learning.

Phil is right on about getting with other farriers. I have been doing that since i started out and still do it to this day. It's fun and you learn something new everytime. Your work speaks louder than words, or an advertisement. If it takes you 15 minutes longer to get one finished, and it looks 15 times better, that's money in the bank!

Practice, Practice, Practice!!! Here is what i have been for about 3 month's now. I am trying to get my CF through the afa so i make a shoe board every 2 weeks. I will make 2 to 3 hand mades shoes with various modifications and at the end of the 2 weeks i have a complete shoe board. Is it something i would hang up and dispaly not by any means but it's getting there and the time i spend at the anvil has become so much more efficent, I be tin the past several months i have shaved off at least 10-15 minutes per horse while maintaining the same quality of work. Now that's money in the bank.

Hope there is something useful in there for you,

Don

Sounds like you are in the Texoma area. You should be able to pick up enough broodmare trim accounts to keep you afloat until you get the skills to start doing the better horses. With the brrodmares you will start getting the yong horses that are starting training and then you will get some of the bottom end show horses. It kind of works its way up until you end up showing good ones. Go to the Farriers that are doing the big show barns and breeders in the area and make friends. If they know that you want to work and care about the quality of work that you turn out most of these guys will throw you some bones.

Ronald Aalders travels into Texoma to shoe some world class reiners, I would offer to buy lunch if he would let you tag along.

I would find a mentor, Dusty Franklin lives in Minco OK I think and he is all about trying to help someone that wants to better themselves he might be able to hook you up with someone.
