Community... 15 Aug 2004 18:45 #1

As I post this, these boards have been back for a very short time, and there are only 38 members. Yet I find it interesting that virtually all of the 38 are farriers (the horse owners will be along as they have specific and immediate concerns and/or problems).

Basically, we're seeing a community coming back together, and it strikes me that it's kind of part and parcel of what we do. We tend to work alone, yet we hunger for the fellowship and comaraderie of those who do what we do and care about what we care about. Yeah, we have our differences, and we spit and spat with one another, but we feel a sense of community.

Right now, in the AFA, we're seeing a major move where new membership benefits are being developed and offered. People are saving literally thousands of dollars on new trucks and tractors and even saving money on buying things like paint. But, for me, the real benefit is still the community--the people willing to share their ideas and talents, the people willing to drive down the road to help someone out who's hurt, the people who "know" you even though you've never met.

So... this forum is about "improving our businesses and careers," but that's really what all these forums are about, isn't it? Whether it's an internet forum, a clinic, a contest, or an association, it's about us working as individuals within a larger community... [okay, I'll dry my eyes and shut up]

I agree, it is great to see the members list grow. It really helps to share storys, lift spririts, help each other out with various problems and make friends. We all know how buisy and involved we can get with customers and it is nice to have a place to go to relax and chat with friends. My family appreciates it, gives there ears a break.

Not to forget the ladies that have helped , me personally as well as those on the www forums , fabulass all of you

Ive three wouderful Blokes down here that without Id be nothing in the farriery way
the help that these fellars have given me in the past and are still giving today is humbleing to say the least

they helped me because they maybe thought I was a good enough bloke
They showed me they were even better and showed me how to be or at least try to be even better , as a farrier and a person a MATE

I had a falling out with one of them , some of it my fault
Im dissapointed and sadened by this to the point where Ive tried to appoligise , but alass to on avail

this has made me try to show the remaining two fellars just how much I appreaciate them and how greatfull I am for their gift of a carear
a gift that feeds my family houses then educates then and letes me hold my head up while walking through my community

as you say Dan Ive never met any of you jokers either ,

Danvers;
Been a while since you and I spoke.

I can see happening in Vermont what you mention in the above thread.

The new association has started forming a community of farriers. The other night after our meeting, we actually sat around for another hr. just talking and relating common ground.

Up until now, it was "hi ! How you doing", but not actually getting together.
I was the farrier for a horse sale and before the day ended there were 3 other farriers set up along side me. A grill was brought out and steaks were cooking.
During the day two other farriers we didn't know had stopped to pass the time. Their attention caught by our association banner we had hung.

There are still a bunch sitting on the fence waiting to see if we sink or swim, but we have a couple filtering in because of the forging clinic were putting on. I figure in next 2 yrs. many more will find there way to joining.<present membership is 18 and three more I know are joining.>

I haven't forgotten your gracious offer to speak to our group.

Teaching others how to work together and open up to ask for advice or better yet offer advice is what we are all about.

Whats the old saying? "man is not an island?"

When farriers unite good things can happen.

Vermonter's <as are most New Englanders,> are slow to accept change. But change is coming, and as a group we can be better prepared.

Boards like this one where we have a chance to read posts from folks such as you, are to many, a lifeline to questions.

Thankyou

I agree with vthorseshoe. It has been great to take off a day to ride around with another farrier to see how he/she do things. I really enjoyed the day we spent , talking of things we are trying to accomplish in the new Assn., sharing ideas on how a horse moves, how a trim job changes everything, sharing with clients how a particular shoe or trim affects the horses way of going ect. We are all so used to getting up and working by our selves that a little company goes a long way. So stay in touch with the comunity!
