I am in the process of reconnecting with my roots in Westchester County NY. Family and friends are the big draw. I plan to offer my services in the area.

One of my pet peeves here in Maine is when a guy from a cheaper market comes to the area and unknowingly brings along a low price list. I hate being undercut by an experienced farrier who if he only knew our rates would come in at the market rates and not depress prices. Its my feeling that if you are good at what you do you should not buy business you should earn it. And if you help lift rather than depress prices you will be more welcome in a local farrier community.

Well now thats me as I know that prices in the Westchester County, NY, Dutchess County NY and Fairfield County, CT area are in a vastly different price class than here in rural maine. But I have no idea what they are and I don't want to be that guy who undercuts everybody and causes a lot of bad feeling in the local farrier community. My pricng policy has always been to be in the top third tier of fees. I don't want to be the most expensive guy but I don't want be a factor in depressing prices either. I like to compete on the quality of the work and service not the price.

I am looking for information as to the price range for a trim for a horse, trim for a draft horse and four plain flat steel shoes for a horse in this area.

I am also curious if there are any formal or informal farrier associations in the area that are worth joining.

OK so a crescendo of silence as expected LOL. So what I'm going to do is use this thread to discuss my process and results as I proceed to enter a new market in the hope that it will be of use to new farriers.

Now your milage may vary since I am a highly certified farrier in the niche market of natural trimming and shoeing and therapueutic/perfomrmance work. Not a new farrier looking for his first customers but still should be helpful to the newbies.

By way of backround I spent 23 years in sales and sales management then in 2000 started a farrier business in maine. I ran into a guy at a clinic in southern CT in 2004 who claimed to be charging $90 for a trim in westchester and $300 four 4 flat shoes. If this is true and not BS that's the highest fees I have run into anyplace. My recent review of COTH postings seems to point towards a low end of trim/front/four shoes of $55/120/195. Conversations with a farrier in northern NJ around the same year had four flat at about $215 at hunter/dressage barns.

So the tasks are pricing and marketing. I'm going to run down in july and hit the feed stores putting up flyers (BTW for newbies plan on other farriers to maybe take down flyers and business cards, it happens sometimes) and more importantly look for what regional horse magazines are by the register. These can be great places to advertise and the rates will be in the back of the publication.

Pricing can be tricker. I dont want to overcharge and not get clients but I dont want to leave money on the table. I strive to be in the top third price wise. Not the most expensive but up there. And for the newbies I STARTED my business in 2000 right at those price points based on advice from good old horseshoes.com. It worked great to not try and "buy" business but to earn it. I built the business slower than if I was competing on price but got better behaved horses and better quality owners than if I had come in with the lowest prices. If you come in competing on price you are vulnerable to losing customers to anyone willing to undercut your price. If you come in in the top third and compete on quality, value and service you keep customers for the long haul. As calls come in (from flyers, ads, craigslist etc.)the key data to gather is who are they using and why are they calling. A great question to ask is "what did you like best about your previous farrier service". Then shut up and they will tell you everything that they did not like. Follow up by asking what they were paying and keep notes.

I'll keep you all posted as to how it goes in the hopes that my experience will be helpful to someone new or moving to a new area.

Update spoke with a friend who shoes for the NJ hunter/Jumper, Dressage crowd. He advised middle of the pack pricing would be trim $75 4 flat shoes $225.
