At least in the United States, that's a really good question and one that is worthy of it's own thread.

I've seen Esco's work. It is usually a good mechanical solution for horses presenting serious pathologies. He invests a lot of time and effort sharing those solutions with other farriers at clinics around the country. That work and educational effort is what put him in the Hall of Fame. It is an honor he has earned.

That said, if you put Esco's and John's work side-by-side, it would be an apples and oranges comparison.

The difference is in the quality level of the basics. It's a huge difference!

It's like comparing my own work to Trnka, Crothers or other top hands. I shoe a horse and think I did a fair job. Then I look at their work and want to throw my tools in the dirt and walk away in shame.

High quality basics. Shoe making, fit, nailing, finish. Those are the 'standards' where most of us fall short. That's where you'll feel like you're drowning in your own sweat before you begin to get it right.

We get away with it because, in many/most cases, it doesn't matter to the horse and the owners don't know any better.

If they did, a lot of us would have a much tougher time earning a living.

Mark, you talk about high quality basics. Would when to ask for x-rays be a basic as well? Do you think some farriers wait to long to ask, and try to fix it without them? My standards are simple. They are the same standards that any farrier here has.

Would be nice if it were as simple as just "asking for x-rays". I'd imagine it's not the farrier waiting too long or trying to work blind to prove a point.
