Gary, that sucks.

Prices for hay is killing business, no one is breeding...still quite a few shows have full parking lots thank God!! Canchasers , ropers, Sorters and Cutters will keep going, and rodeo..

No one is breeding, ****, what the heck has my wife been spending all that money on. Man, I'm going to have a talk with her right now. LOL! Breedings are actually going super this year, the most activity we have ever had this early. Yeah hay prices sucked. Yeah we buy semis of it every few weeks but here are the facts. Every market is unique. Every customer is unique. Every farrier is unique. It is important to determine what your local market will bear and what your skills deserve, market yourself well and always try to improve your skills to differentiate yourself from the 2 wk school grads. And yes, sometimes, appearance means more than it should. Dress sharp and dress your hooves sharp and go far. I used to tell young engineers dress like managers and act likes managers and you will greatly improve your chance of becoming a manager. Same should work for you guys, dress like a pro, act like a pro, and you wont have to compete as an amateur. You are worth more.

Well Steve, my area is flatlineing right now. 20 yrs ago we had the cream of the crop of cutters now they are all in Stephenville...I mean it , NO one is breeding in this area at all..you are down where all the money is near Austin, very differant game here and I have worked this area for 30yrs so I feel I know what I am talking about....one of my biggest TWHs barns shut here doors and send almost 45 head of horses home. I have stopped there every Wed for the past 12 yrs, plus Dan Helton, who alot of folks know on this site couldnt build a business here and had to move back to Indiana...

Gary, it's tough when you have a school and it's not a high caliber deal. Truning out guys and gals on two week intervals. We have one here to, I went to it and I'm sure at the beginning I was one the others griped about. Now I'm one of the higher priced guys even though I mainly do back yarders. The guy working with me went there to and he crashed after a couple years and went back to working on a ranch for a while. Then he had a daughter and needed to be closer to town and wanted to get back to shoeing. Had to retrain him out of what he learned and his bad habits and now he's stating to get calls from some good people. Although he got one today for 8 rescue horses with the caveat that they hadn't been handled much. Going to be he!! going through bad horses for the second time. He won't have to many though. Our hay prices have gone up to and some people tried to get an injunction against hay growers to stop them from raising prices. So far it's going over like a fa rt in church.

I had a friend that was at the IFR bucking stock sale and Shawnee sale in the past week. He said horses were bringing more money than they have in a long time. The big sale in Kentucky is supposed to be up as well, geuss I'll find out in March, maybe I can get below 15 head before I have to buy more hay and not have to give them away.

LOL! Ah boy. Russia is a free market and we are wanting to be a communist country, good thing my old daddio (84) is not on the Internet or you'd get an ear full on that one. Somebody gets an injunction to tell me what I have to charge for my hay and I'll plow it under and live on the dole. And we have had to pay through the nose this year but that's called supply and demand, think I learned that in about 10th grade. We need to quit whining and looking for "greedy" people who happen to be living where it rained, next year the same farmers could lose their crops so are those that want lower prices from them now going to send them money when they have no crops? No, just never works that way.

As to giving warnings and sending letters, one time I got mad at what someone on here wrote on this subject so I raised my price $10 the next day. Didn't make any difference in the number of clients but it was funner going to the bank.

So I'm just wondering when everyone is raising prices are you doing it across the board or just on shoeing? I have only raised prices on trims one time from 35 to 40 dollars.

I'm doing across the board. I started at $35 a trim, then went to $25 to get my work seen. Now I'm going back up to my original prices in June.

FEES, your original FEES. We're professionals, we have FEES for our services which includes prices for materials. Get in the habit of saying "My fee for trimming is_____________" "My fee for shoeing is_____________" or words to that effect. :)

Raise them every year. I perosnally raised mine twice this past year. If you feel your work is worthy of what you are charging then dont be afraid to ask it. I feel that I am a professional at my job and I have every right to make a professionals wage (75-100k) as a nurse, doctor or lawyer and so on and so forth. My saying is charge em til you like em! lol

Thanks for all your help guys. This definitely gives me an idea and a place to start in this part of my business. I apologize fo leaving out name and other information about myself. Just started using the site. My name is Jess Smith. I am from Dunn, NC. I attended Danny Ward's Horsehoeing school in the fall of 2010 and immediately started apprenticing and am still doing so at this time while also taking on clients of my own. Once again thank you to everyone who posted.

I like small fee increases. Say $1 on a trim. Nobody seems to care about a buck. I started at $25/trim in 2000 and am now at $43.00 Slowly went up over the years. Big error to avoid is to start out cheap. You will attract mostly customers looking for low price rather than customers who value you and your services. When I started trim prices ranged from $15-30 so I picked 25 to be nearer the top of the range. Very glad I did.
