These are photos from the National Certification Course at Heartland Horseshoeing School, taken October 2011.

Hoof photos are from horses I worked on throughout the week.

I would recommend this course to anyone seeking to improve their skillset or pursuing AFA certification.

More photos to follow.

Cheers,
Mark

Great job Mark....
You have set a path for yourself and never stopped.
I await to hear of your passing your shoe board and being awarded the title of Certified Farrier.
I know of few who have worked as hard as you have.

I am proud of you friend.

my 2 cents worth ;)

Any pictures of the shoes? Why no clips?

Yes Travis, those are all forges. The adjacent wall (unseen in the photos) provides another set of coal forges. The large brick forge on the left side of the shop is where Chris and Cody provide demonstrations.

Sorry, no close-up photos of the forges. The forge base is steel.

I used SX8/7 kegs for my test (CF practical) so photos of the shoes pre-installed wouldn't be very interesting. It's unusual to see a CF candidate apply clipped shoes. They are not required and if you use them, they score them. Just something else to take a hit on if they are less than perfect.

The CJF exam requires clipped handmades. In that case, photos would be more interesting and appropriate.

Mark

I'd say fair Smitty. There were several things I would change but a running stop watch and lot's of spectators always serve to paint things in a different light when you are doing the work.

There were a lot of practice runs throughout the week to prepare us for the exam. I think some of my practice runs went better than the final shoeing exam. There's a "luck factor" too. How well behaved is the horse? How are the feet shaped and what condition are they in?

I drew a pretty decent horse with nicely shaped feet. That certainly helped.

The AFA testers and examiner were, in my opinion, very helpful, exceptionally fair and very professional in their assessment of the work. They were quick to point out the things I did well and constructively critical of the things I could have done better.

Mark

Chip, sorry I missed your question earlier.

Almost all of the practical exams were done using a gas forge. One young lady did stand for the CJF practical using coal. It was the only time I saw anyone bring a horse inside the shop. There weren't any coal forges outside.

Mark
