They certainly are not the ultimate test of riding ability in my opinion. They used to have this event in palm beach, http://www.dressagedaily.com/Photo/2003/dd_200304/dd_20030415.html its very entertaining and unique. Without turning this into an editorial, I can say that the competitors from one discipline in particular consistently show that they could easily transition into being top class riders in the other two disciplines. While the transition is much more awkward for the others.

Before it was privatized, the US Modern Pentathlon Team consisted mostly of members of the military who trained at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. Under the old setup, the jumping phase of the contest was contested on horses unknown to any of the competitors and drawn at random and I'm here to tell you: It made damn good watching!

Personally, if I was going to pick a group of riders that I thought would be able to excel in any discipline, it'd be race track exercise riders. I've seen some of 'em kick out and ride some horses rank enough to win something in most bronc ridings and never take a deep breath.

My father is a horse trader. I grew up riding dozens of different horses a week. Everything from back in fourth in the auction ring to the top of the standards on a course. Every weekend we were either on a fresh horse in a jumper class or on some puke getting ready to blast out of the box after a steer. The old man would say "you can ride 1 horse for 10 years. You get 1 years experience 10 times. You ride 10 horses a week, now your getting some real experience"

I think he was right, I feel fairly confident I could get on anything with hair on it and make it do what I want. Within reason of course.

I think ur papa was a wise man...I work in a lot of barns with push button horses and kids with backing of money to put the child on the best horse the parent can buy...but I do see a few kids who muck stalls ..clean water bins..wash buckets and feed on weekend just to pay for rideing lessons...they end up on every project horse the trainers may have in the barn...those kids are far better riders than those on push button horses..I seen one of the girls on a project pony ridein to the big areana and she was on the phone and while on the phone the pony was rearin up..crow hopein..and kickin out ..it was just another day to this 14 year old girl..

When I was still shoeing, I kept a list of 13-14 year old girls. When I has some guy with a problem horse, I gave them one of the numbers. Those girls have time, tenacity, and no drivers license to go get a job. Most of the horse just needed hours and wet saddle blankets. Most of the girls ended up to be hands as well.

I think the same way. When school wasn't in session. We rode 8 to 12 green horses a day 6 days a week, and each green horse only got ridden about every third day because we didn't have enough help on the farm. After work we workers rode our own prospects and personal horses, so getting on 14 horses a day was an average day. Mondays we got half a day off but still had to come back and feed up and do the barn work. Ride 80 or 90 horses a week and it doesn't take too many years to get a little cocky that there isn't much that you can't do. I think its funny how a little 18 year old girl can call herself a "trainer" having ridden only her 3 old horses for most of her life. Horses move and act differently, this is why so many people get humbled by way of a head plant.
