TOPIC: Should mom send son to farrier school?

Should mom send son to farrier school? 11 May 2011 23:26 #1

Okay, so it looks like college may be a slow process for my equestrian minded son. He enjoys working with his hands, works well with horses.......... He is 20 and trying to find his way. He is interested in considering farrier school, has been around horses since he was little and has a good understanding of horses and horse people. The business part will have to be learned. If you had such a child, would you send them to farrier school? If so, what would you look for in a school? Is there a certification/accreditation process to consider? All I know about is the Okalahoma school and I see that there is one in Colorado from postings of one member. A local master farrier is offering classes...............would you consider such a thing?
I appreciate your comments.

Hard to say W/O knowing him, but it was/is good to me. If he should decide later to do something else, there's no better part time job. As a grad student, I could choose my hours and make more on a Saturday than a week of flipping burgers. I'm still shoeing at age 73, because I enjoy it, not because I have too, and I've given up my engineering career, but it was a fall back if I became physically unable to shoe. The fall back is a nice option, but if he likes owners and horses, shoeing school is a great start to the rest of his life.

After many years away from school, I'll leave comments on good schools today to more recent graduates.

The best things about the good old days -- I wasn't good and I wasn't old.

The older I get, the more horses I shoe, the fewer things that I can absolutely, positively fix.

If your son is willing to work, it's a great job. I have just returned from heartland hss and wrote a blog if he wants to get an idea of what to expect. www.farrierkane.com/blog

Chris is an excellent teacher, I would the best, and I do not regret travelling to the other side of the world to learn from him. Many of the younger ones quickly decided that they hated him because he would not rescue them from their own frustrations and they seemed to take having to work hard at gaining the skills as a personal insult. You either sink or swim there and it is totally up to each person how much they get out of it.

From what I understand it is not the most expensive school, nor the cheapest, if he works hard it is definitely money well spent. Good luck on the journey if he decides to go with it.

Hi Fran,
I graduated from Oklahoma Horseshoeing School. Don't even consider it.
Heartland, is very good. Dusty Franklin has a good reputation, and there are other good ones.
Before you spend a dime (or tens of thousands of dimes) on a school, he should work with a few Farriers, as a ride along.
He should know that he wants to do this and at his age that can change fast.
That said, this may be the thing for him, and he can get a lot of help here.

As Bill said put him in the truck with a farrier for a bit..shoeing horses is a labor of love..you have to love it to do it because the rewards are few..the work is hot or cold..ur hands and body takes a beating ...long hours and grinding it out day in and day out.. hell I ain't sure why anyone would wanna be a farrier..

It also helps if you've had a serious head injury.

Just want to add Pacific Coast Horseshoeing School to the list of recommended schools.

It is very tough academical and both instructors are not only great farriers, they are also exceptional teachers.

Clint has a very good point here.
I helped a 21 year old who was sent to a good school by a family friend of his, then came to work with me for two months. He only lasted one as he found that there was a huge amount to learn and that it was hard work.
As we were discussing the situation, I realized, and told him, that his problem was that he didn't have a dime into the cost.
Fran, at 20, the kid could take a year and earn a tuition.

One day at school I saw a young student squeezing his rasp between the blades of his nice, new GE nippers. I told him firmly and in a horrified voice to stop that immediately! he asked 'why, I do it all the time?!' another young one defended him saying 'they're his nippers, he can do what he likes'. Obviously these guys didn't pay for their tools, it made me sick to see it. I told him it offended me the way that p1ssing on the bible would offend him.

Young ones have so many more years to get good at this and often they can't see what a blessing that is! I was the same.....

Fran it does make a big difference when you have personally invested the time and money yourself. Ha, sometimes over the last few years I have wondered why I'm sticking at this, it is terribly hard to learn the skills. It is the time and money it owes me that has made me stick with it in the hard times. That, and the fact that when I'm under a horse I know it's all good. ;)

At 20 he can send himself to school. I'm all about helping someone. But at 20 it is time to step up, big steps cause he is behind.

My son will probably go to shoeing school for self preservation in college. And he thinks college is a good idea compared to me trying to work him to death.

He is beginning to associate air conditioning with college education, funny how 100* days and hard feet make a young one think about education.

My last apprentice quit school to work for me with me telling him to finish college. I talked to him the other day and he was enrolled in college again and could make the scheduleing work because he can shoe around it.
