Well I forget how small the world is thanks to the internet. I really haven't considered that Farriers from this website would be potential attendees to the clinic in Magnolia. This is the second clinic that I have been involved in with Jimbo Stewart. We are both students of Dr. Redden, he being involved much longer than myself. Jimbo was present when the evolution of the first venograms and rocker/banana shoes was happening. He has a lot of experiences with the rocker shoe to share. We met at one of Dr. Ric Reddens clinics and put on our first clinic in Norman Ok in January of this year.
Myself, I am a 2003 graduate of Oklahoma State University College of Vet Med. I grew up learning to shoe horses on the ranch and in a packing outfit in northern California. I have always had a great passion for the hoof and limb mechanics/dynamics. I was exposed to Dr. Redden shortly after graduating vet school and have been on a podiatry road ever since. I really liked how in depth that Dr. Redden evaluated radiographs and external hoof characteristics. Everyone knows that a graduating veterinarian learns as much about hoof mechanics and disease as a Farrier learns about cardiology! So I am just a guy that graduated vet school that has persued a higher level of education regarding the mechanics, diagnosis and treatment of common hoof ailments. Along the way I have developed my farriery skills but I am sure they are still lacking.
It will be a laid back environment in which we will spend some lecture time in the morning and hands on demo shoeing and trimming in the afternoon. Lots of radiographs will be taken and you will be exposed to a very in depth way to evaluate foot radiographs and give you some external markers to help find the coa.
So, Yes don't waste your money if you have no inclination to further your education and possibly be exposed to a different approach that may help something on your books. Whether or not you agree with the banana/rocker shoe, the manner in which I have learned to evaluate a foot from Dr. Redden and through my own experiences is above and beyond what most people have been exposed to, is worth learning. I feel there is a new standard to which all shoeing devices/orthotics must be evaluated by. The venogram and serial farrier friendly soft tissue detail radiographs are the standard at which I evaluate and monitor my treatment success or failure. My radiographs and venograms will tell me it isnt working long before the horse does.
I welcome you all to check out my blog in which I occasionally post case studies and current case work ups.
