TOPIC: Okinawa Japan, Here I Come!

Okinawa Japan, Here I Come! 11 Dec 2010 16:04 #1

Has anybody worked either with the Japanese or on Okinawa?

My husband is active duty Air Force and we've got orders!! I've gotten in contact with a barn (10 horses, 5 ponies) that is run mostly by military dependents that are eager for my arrival, saying that they cannot find a farrier on the island at all.

I’m worried about working with the Japanese because I’m a female doing a “man’s job”. I’ve run into enough of that attitude in small town USA, but If I’m the only game in town….

I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

What a perfect way to see japan ,no idea of how they see things .
I know the have high rise building as stables ,and no history of shoeing horses ,apart from rice straw hoof boots.
Have a great time!!

I was in Okinawa in '93. Women were looked upon as second class citizens. ie: If a woman was in an auto accident, it was considered her fault. Doubt that has changed much.. Also, you are a foreigner (gaigin?), which is not in your favor.

However, it is a beautiful island, and the people are generally wonderful, and will treat you well, in spite of your "shortcomings". The "women thing" is just traditional. The Okinawans will be polite and cordial, they are just pretty set in their ways. At least that is what it was like when I was there. I would love to visit again. Enjoy yourself. I'm envious.

I have met and spoken to Dr. Sammy Aoki at a couple of AFA conventions he is very engaging and I am sure would be a source of good information.
You might try the following:

Just threaten to nuke 'em. It's worked in the past.
My Uncle taught English at a couple of Universities for thirty years in Japan. He would run into prejudice occasionally, but it helped that my Aunt was native Japanese, he had a PhD. in Japanese Folklore, and could speak flawlessly.

I was stationed in Okinawa ( Camp Schwab) in 01 and 02. You'll be at Kadena, in downtown Okinawa City. Don't know much about the equine world there as I never saw a horse the whole time I was there. I did see a bull riding arena and some of those locals are pretty decent bull riders. One thing to watch out for, being a round eye in Okinawa, any accident is automatically your fault and you will have to make a personal apology to the family and may be forced to pay restitution, and the Japanese drive like they are trying to get you to hit them so stay on your toes and keep the insurance paid.

When you get there, get a ride to a Marine Base and buy a car off someone who has orders. I bought a 3 yr old car for 2 or 3 hundred and made money when I sold it ( to an Air Force guy by the way).

One thing to make sure of, is that you see the island you are on. There are some great castles and beautiful shrines. Also, Oura Won bay on Camp Schwab has an awesome beach and the reef keeps out any sea life that could eat you.

congratulations and have fun

Thanks for the input guys!!

I've sent an email to the Japanese Farrier's Association (thank you Jay) and am looking into what I will have to do to work in Japan as a farrier.

Don't forget to take pictures, I took a photo album full when I was there and I still missed stuff.

Oh yeah, stay away from the king kong motel on the main highway, whisper alley and the buy me drinkies...but if you get to Henoko ( the little town outside Camp Schwab) there is a great restaurant called Oceans. 10 yrs ago you could get a plate of Lo Mein and an Orion for about 500 yen and they had the freshest sushi on the island. They also had a shoes on eating section, with chairs, which you'll find out is pretty hard to find when you get away from Gate 2 street.

Oh, and be prepared for buying gas by the liter instead of gallon ( at prices higher than what we pay for a gallon).
