I am stuck on this.
I frequently have to recommend sole tougheners or thrush treatment and I know the client wont get the product for a week or more due to convenience.

On one hand I think it would be great to offer the products to my client at retail price(farrier supply gives a discount) on the other hand I worry people will think I am only recommending a product be used so I can sell more product.

Also before anyone says anything about sales of products. I would price it as a service.

"Thrush treatment demo" then gift them the remainder of the bottle I used in the demo.

So do you carry a few bottles of your favorite thrush med., or sole toughener?

I try to get my clients to buy the flyspray I use. It is called Natural 7, kills all bugs from mesquitos to bumbees in flight. It isn't oily and doesn't make me sick from absorbing it in my sweaty skin all day long. I don't sell it because I want nothing to do with sales tax!:D

I only carry products from Life data..

I give a money back on the FF if there is no difference ,and never had ,only on horses that seem to really need it..and with alot of information to how to use it.

I find the stall master may get angry because you are butting in on their feed programm.......fine feeling help against problems There..

I sell CS and other frog stuff...

Sometimes mix my own product for the frog if I have time...

Have never looked at the turn over but its worth it if it works and the client is happy!

I haven't stared doing that yet. But I am planning to start. There is only a couple of things that I would like to carry. Thrush treatment, my favorite hoof dressing and possibly some sole toughener. Mostly because the local stores don't carry the brands that I think work the best. I have had several customers who keep asking. I just haven't worked out the whole "how to carry and sell product, without selling product" thing. :D

I have carried a small inventory before of different hoof related products and sold them to clients "at cost", many of the clients thought that it was handy to just get the product right then and there. Cant say how I took care of the whole sales tax thing, I married an accountant so I just turn her loose and stay out of the way.

If you buy them retail, aren't you covered on sales tax as long as you don't charge a markup? I was under the impression from a tax friend that as long as the sales tax is paid on the product during the distribution, you were set. The only issue is when you buy at wholesale and don't charge tax.

Of course, in NY we have to charge sales tax on services, so we already do sales tax work. . .

Alternately, you could repackage some things like thrushbuster and durasole or the like into little sample bottles and give them away as demos, just write the cost of the original off as a business expense?

Maybe the companies that make the product have sample sizes one could buy from them in bulk?

JMI but, that would cost you (your business) money to do that though. Money that would have no return.. Which over say 30 yrs could add up to a lot if done on a regular basis. I personally am into not giving anything away, I make recommendations to different products but the customer is on their own and it is their responsiblity to buy it or not, not mine.

i am starting to carry thrush treatment and hoof dressing to sell to my clients. i wasn't worried about the sales tax, i will just add it on the bill as part of the shoeing fee.

I prefer to make money shoeing horses. Trust is an issue in choosing a farrier, and I do not want to provide a reason for people to question my advice by profiting from it. I prefer to tell them where to find the products I recommend.

I'm with Pat on this one.... I don't want to put myself in the position of appearing to profit from a recommendation.... BUT..... I do carry Durasole, Thrush Buster, Mastitis treatment, hoof sealer, 3M poultices, etc on my truck and if I want a client to use it I will give them one and tell them where they can get more and just ask them to kindly replace mine when they buy theirs....... I find that two things happen.... they are more likely to use the requested treatment and I know when/if they get anymore to continue treatment..... also, most of my clients replace the one I gave them with 2 or more, so it allows me to gain inventory and just "keep paying it forward"......

What i do is buy most of the products that I use through my Farriers United site. I do not keep a lot of products on hand except for mastitis treat (today). I sell a ton of it. I buy 12 tubes for around $28 and I will make $75 on each box. I do not charge more per tube than our local farm garden. I will sell 2 boxes a week. For most other products I will send an invoice to the customer with the product attached just to make it convenient for them. That way there is no question what I recommending to them. I have found that most of my customers like buying from me and go to my site and buy all kinds of stuff. I would rather sell products than shoe one more horse a day!
